IMPROVED FLOOD-GATE.
tits stshnle referat tu in ttm stas rztin mit mating' part nt its same.
TO ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN: I Beit known that I, JOSEPH LEATHERMAN, of Napoleon, in the, county ,of Henry, and State ot' Ohio, have invented a. new and improved Flood-Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to makel and'lise the s ame, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part ci' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved {lood-gate. looking down stream.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved flood-gate for use upon brooks, creeks, and other streams, which shallhe 'so ccnstructedlthat the bars may riseend'fall with the rise and fall of the water, and which will allow drift to pass through without becoming choked up; and it consists in ,the construction and combination ofthe various parts, as hereinafter' more fully described. i
A are the main posts of the gate, and which are securely set in the ground. B are two auxiliary posts, which are set at a short distance from the posts A, andthe upper ends of which are connected with thel upper ends of the said main posts A by the cross-bars C.
D are` inclined bars, the lower ends of which are securely attached to the mainpcsts A, and upper ends of which are securely attached to the auxiliary posts B, or to the cross-bars C.
E are the bars which extend across the stream, and the lower parts of the ends of which are cut away, so as to leave arms at their upper edges, which rest in the anglo between the lower ends of the inclined bars D and the posts A, as shown in fig. 2. This allows the lower edge of said bars E to hang vertical, when not acted upon by the water.
' As the water rises, the bars E at first take a horizontal position., and as the water continues to rise, the bars E, one after another, and each independent ofthe other, rise along the inclined bars D, allowing the water to have free course.
In ease any drift floating in the stream should be carried against the gate,.'it raises the bars E, which immediately drop to their places upon the passage of the said drift, thus keeping the gate always vfree. l
vHaving thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An improved flood-gate, formed by the combination of the' posts A, vauxiliary posts B, cross-bars C,
inclined bars D, and hangngbars Ewith each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
` 2. The inclined bars D, upon which the hanging bars E move up and down with the rise and fall of the water, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose" Bet forth.
The above speciiication of my invention signed by me, this 18th dy'of March, 1868.
JOSEPH LEATHERMAN.
