Be it known that I, DOMINIK IVE, a resident of Solingen, Germany, Brhlerstrasse 74, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Fastening the wedges driven in from the front, as hithertoA practiced., is obviated.
Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a front end elevation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a plan of the head of a tail or tilt hammer, showing only part of the hammershaft.
a is the hammer-head having upper converging walls, and b is the wooden shaft.
c is a wood block with inclined sides.
d is a metal ring of rectangular shape in plan, having its inside surfaces shaped to iit the-upper part of the head a.
e e are two metal wedges.
f is an ordinary bearingwedge.
In fastening the hammer-head L on the handle b according to this invention the metal ring d is slipped on the hammer-head and the wood block c is placed with its wider base resting on the shaft b inside thehammerhead. Then the wedges e e are inserted, one on each side, between the block c and the hammer-head and then driven iirmly downward in a direction approximately parallel to the working plane of the hammer toward the shaft b. By this means the hammer-head is fixed firmly on the shaft and in such a manner that it will have a constant tendency to become fixed more tightly on the shaft by the impact of the hammer. Further, this fastening will prevent the splitting of the hammer-shaft.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination in a hammer-head having an opening therein extending from a point near its lower end through the top the upper walls of said head being convergent, a handle fitting in said opening, a wedge-shaped block resting on said handle within theopening metal wedges adapted to be driven on each side of the block in a direction approximately parallel to the movement ofthe handle between said block and the hammer-head, and a ring surrounding the upper part of the hammer-head, substantially as described.
