UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1906.
Application filed February 6, 1906. Serial No, 299 792.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. PIERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rulers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable-others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rulers, and has for an object to provide a ruler embodying new and improved features of convenience and efficiency of operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ruler embodying means for handling convenient to the operator and ofl'ering no obstruction to the use of the instrument.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ruler embodying a plurality of fingerreceiving apertures in alinement adjacent the middle of the ruler and an elongated aperture at the middle provided with a longitudinal web.
It is well known that in the use of rulers in ruling with ink a quantity of ink always adheres to the ruling edge, and on lifting the ruler the fingers practically become covered with ink.
It is an object of this invention to provide a ruler of improved form embodying the perforations whereby the same may be lifted without inking the fingers of the operator.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved ruler. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the ruler, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout both views.
In its preferred embodiment the improved ruler forming the subject-matter of this application comprises .a ruler structure of any approved dimensions and conformation, as shown at 10, and provided with anyimproved form of edges, as the angular edges shown at 11 and 12.
Substantially midway between the ends of the ruler the structure is provided with an elongated opening 13, longitudinally Within which is disposed a web or division-plate 1'4, secured in any approved manner, as by the beads 15, and proportioned and positioned for convenience in being grasped by the fingers and thumbs of' the operator in handling the ruler. Upon opposite sides of the said opening 13 and in alinement therewith are provided other openings, as 16, in any approved number and proportioned to permit the insertion of the fingers and thumbs of the operator and properly positioned for convenience in such use.
It will be readily understood that in operating the ruler above described the web 14 or either or any of the openings 16 or all of said devices are used separately or simultaneously, as the nature of the work and the disposition of the operator may render desirable. It will be readily seen that the device here shown offers a means for conveniently grasping, holding, and lifting the ruler which does not extend above the surface of the instrument and offers no obstruction to the use or storage of the ruler.
What I claim is- 1. A ruler provided with an elongated ap erture substantially midway its ends, a web having parallel sides disposed perpendicular to the plane of the ruler and provided at its opposite ends with beads engaged within the material of the ruler.
2. A ruler provided with an elongated opening substantially midway its ends, a web disposed within the elongated opening and having substantially parallel sides disposed perpendicular to the plane of the ruler, and provided with a plurality of openings upon opposite sides of the elongated opening with their edges in alinement and extending parallel to the edges of the ruler.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWVARD R. PIERSON.
