BOX-FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 906.
Application filed July 2 5. 1905.' 'Beriai No- 271.140.
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. HULBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain nea and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
7 This invention comprises a novel form of lock or fastening means particularly designed for boxes, crates, and receptacles or in like ca acit he intent of the invention is to secure a lock of very simple construction and yet possessed of great substantiality necessary in the actual use thereof.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the side and top portions of a crate, partially broken away, the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line X X of 151% 4. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line Y of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line Z Z of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fi 2, embodying a modification.
Correspon ing and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The invention is shown in the construction wherein it is particular] adapted for use on receptacles, portions 0 a box being illustrated in the drawings in showing the appli- V cation of the invention.
The numeral 1 designates a side of a crate or receptacle, and the numeral 2 the cover. A fixed catch 3 in the form of a pin or stud is secured to the cover 2 and is to be engaged by suitable meansa plied to the side 1 in order to positively ock the cover 2 horn movement. The catch 3 is formed with a beveled nose and a notch 4, so that it wiii readily engage with a latch-plate 5. An attaching-plate 6, which is secured in any substantial manner, preferably by screws, to the interior of the side 1 of the receptacle, is formed at its upper portion with an oblong integral extension or enlargement 7, having a vertical opening 8 therethrough, said 0 ening being adapted to receive the stud or ed opposite end of said iatch plate is formed with an opening receiving a rejection 9 at the inner extremity of a push-rod 10, movable in a horizontal opening 11 in the side 1.
' The push-rod 10 is thus pivotally connected with the latch-plate and passes through an opening in the plate 6 also and is provided at its extremity with a fingeriece or button 12, which is actuated in or or to. force the rod 10 inwardly and impart pivotal move ment to the latch-plate 5 to disenga e the latter from the catch 3. An integral ug 13 projects from the outside of the plate 6 be-f neath the enlargement 7 and spaced from the latter, and the latch-plate 5 is pivotally movable'hetween the parts 7 and 13 snugly fitting therebetween, as shown most clearly in the drawings. The lug 13 is formed with a vertical openin 14 in alinement with the opening 8 of t e enlar ement 7 and this opening receives the hea or outer end of the catch 3 when the latter is in engagement with the latch-plate 5. The latch-plate 5 is provided with a recess 15 leading from an edge thereof and located about centrally of its ends, the innermost side of the recess being beveled downwardl and extending about half-way across an arranged in the path of movement of the catch or stud 3 as the latter is forced through the opening 8 in the enlargement 7. Between the button or finger?iece 12 of the rod 10 and the outer sides the plate 6 is a coil-spring 16; which is mounted upon the rod 18 and which normally tends to expand and force the rod to the outer limit of itsmovement. The normal tendency of the spring 16 is such as to hold the latchlate 5 a. ainst the plate 6 and will cause sai latch-plate to automatically ongage with the catch 3 as the latter is forced into the openings 8 and 14 in closing the cover 2.
In actual use when the cover 2 closes down upon the side 1 the catch 3 enters the opening 8 and pushes the piste 5 to one side against 7 ceptacle, it is necessary to push inwardly upon the button or finger-piece 12, and there- 1 by disengage the plate 5 from the catch 3, l permitting withdrawal of the catch 3 upon opening of the cover 2 in a manner which 1 will be obvious.
Fig. 5 embodies a modification of the inventlon in which the under side of the en largement 7 is provided with a recess 17, in l which. is seated a coil-spring 18. The spring 18 bears at one end against an end of the rel cess 17, and the opposite end of said spring engages or bears against a projection 19, extending upwardly from an end of the latchplate 5 adjacent the point of connection of the push-rod 10 therewith. In this instance the spring 18 coacts with the latch-plate to cause the same to automatically engage with the catch 3 as the latter enters the opening 8 in the enlargement 7, and the spring 16, used in the construction shown in the preferred forms of the invention, will be disposed ofwhen the modification is utilized.
Havin thus described the invention, what is claime as new is 1. In combination, a receptacle embodying a side and a cover, an attaching-plate secured to the side and arran ed upon the interior of the receptacle, sait plate having an extension projecting from the attachingplate and provided with a vertical opening therein, a lug projecting from the attachingplate in spaced relation to the extension, a latch-plate pivoted at one end to the under side of the extension and arranged for movementbetween the extension and the lug, a
catch applied to thecower and ada ted to en age the latch-plate by enterin t e o ening 1n the extension of the attac 'n -p ate, a horizontally-arran ed pressure-r0 passin through the attac ing-plate and the side 0 the receptacle and having its inner end con nected with the latch-plate at the end opposite that pivoted to the extension, and a spring arranged to coaot with the latch-plate to normally hold the same in engagement with the catch on the cover.
2. In combination, a receptacle embodying a side and a cover, an attaching-plate secured to the side and arranged upon the inte rior of the receptacle, said plate having an extension projecting therefrom and provided with an opening therein, a catch applied to the cover and adapted to enter the opening in the extension of the attaching-plate, a latch-plate pivoted at one side of the extension and arranged to engage the catch aforesaid, a pressure-rod passin throu h the aforesaid side of the receptac e and t rough the plate and connected at its inner end with the latch-plate, a finger-piece applied to the outer end of said pressure-rod, and a coilspring arranged upon the pressure-rod and bearin at one end against the finger-piece thcreo to normally hold the latch-plate in en agement with the catch of the cover.
11 testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
