To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN M. VAN ORDEN, of Oedargrove, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Belts, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like numerals on the drawings designating like parts.

This invention relates to wearing-apparel, and more particularly to a belt or similar garment which I have devised as an improvement over what are known as reductionbelts, and constitutes also a device capable of use to advantage in place of surgical or other abdominal bandages, being entirely free from the buckles, straps, &c., hitherto forming a part of such appliances.

Briefly stated, I provide a belt or short girdle or corset of any suitable construction, with an interior lining preferably secured to the belt near its edges and preferably coextensive with, when under tension, the inner areas of the belt, but of smaller dimensions normally, the lining being formed of elastic material, so that when the belt is secured in place upon the body of the wearer it applies to the region covered a uniform pressure of the nature of a gentle continuous massage or kneading, which stimulates the venous circulation, and thereby provides for the removal by the blood of those fatty deposits which are chiefly deposited directly under the skin and are composed largely of liquid ingredients.

The various features of my invention will be illustrated and described fully in the accompanying drawings and specification and set forth in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation of a belt opened out and in the construction of which my improvements have been embodied. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the belt shown in Fig. 1 as it appears when in place upon the body of the wearer, and Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation of the same.

In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description as a convenient form of construction to enable ready and complete understanding of my improvements, the reference-numeral 1 designates a belt or similar garment which may be of any convenient construction or formas, for example, that illustrated in United States Letters Patent granted to me on the 14th day of November, 1904, No. 743,407, and into the description of which I will therefore not enter in this specification. In accordance with my invention I secure to this belt a lining designated by the reference-numeral 2 and which will preferably be applied to each member of the belt, as illustrated, and may be secured thereto in any suitable wayas, for example, by being stitched under the binding 3, when, as will usually be desired, the lining is to cover the entire interior when under tension.

The lining 2 is less normally in area than that of the belt member to which it is applied in accordance with my invention and is formed of elastic materialas, for example, dental rubber or any suitable elastic fabric so that when the belt is secured in place upon the body of the wearer it applies to the region covered a uniform pressure of the nature of a gentle continuous massage or kneading which stimulates the venous circulation, and thereby provides for the re moval by the blood of those fatty deposits which are chiefly deposited directly under the skin and are composed largely of liquid ingredients.

I may vulcanize the lining to approximately the contour which it is desired it shall assume when in place upon the wearer, the reference-numeral 4 designating in Fig. 1 a lining of dental rubber thus vulcanized, while the lining upon the other side is shown as formed of two portions 5 and 6, cut in a shape suitable to cause conformity of the lining, which in this instance is a woven elastic fabric, to the wearer.

Having described thus fully my invention and one convenient mode of carrying the same into effect, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the specific construc' tion and materials illustrated nor in general otherwise than as set forth in the claims read in connection with this specification.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a belt or similar garment of a lining of elastic material normally of less area than that of said belt, but capable of stretching to equal area therewith upon application to the body of the wearer, and to operate thereupon substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination with a belt or similar garment of a lining of elastic material normally of less area than that of said belt, but capable of stretching to be coextensive in area with that of said belt, when applied to the form of the wearer, and cooperating therewith when in place upon the body of the wearer to apply thereto a uniform pressure of the nature of a gentle, continuous massage or kneading, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

' 3. The combination with a belt or garment of the class described of a lining of elastic fabric cut to conform to the body of the wearer, and normally of less area than said I5 belt, but arranged to stretch in. cooperation therewith, substantially as described.
