Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through-a vertical rib in" our belt, along" the" lines 'fl -d in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section on a still larger scale, broken away, through a part of the belt along the lines 5-5 in Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a section through the pad in this belt.
Figure '7 is a perspective view, broken away, of a corner of the pad taken separately, with the layerspartly opened up for purposes of illustration.
In our colostomy belt in the form illustrated, over the colostomy is rectangular pad I0, which has four layers: a layer l2 preferably of sterilized gauze placed next to the colostomy; a layer l4 preferably of raw cotton over the first; a layer It preferably of cloth, as for example a babys wash cloth, over that; and a substantially impervious layer l8, as for example of plastic, on the outside.
Four clamps grip the colostomy pad, one near the top and another near the bottom of each of the vertical edges of the pad, so that the pad is held near each of its four corners. Clamps 20 in the form shown are each of a well known type, with two jaw members 2| and 22 held normally in closed position by clamping member 23, which has a tail tab which will then be resting against the top jaw member 22 at a point below and slightly behind fulcrum 24 of the clamping member, and will thus hold down the jaw member, which is itself iulcrumed behind its point of contact with the tail tab. Opening of the clamping member swings its tail tab forward, first depressing the somewhat resilient top I of the top jaw permitting the topjaw toris'e under suitable spring 'actionwhich h'adpreviously been inhibited by thetab.. The, connection toothe clamps is "preferably by; clothl loops 35, attachednear the tonandfbottomof the rib to moraorless the center of its'nea'r edge, and passingthroughiclamp To 'appro imately similar positions on the .-op'-, posite edge of'each ribisanchored the two-ends of the respective cloth s'trip d'l. lntermediatly cloth' strips 31 "pass through rings 38;.preferably of bone, thus forming, with their respectiveribs',
triangles eachhaving ftwo mobile sides The rings in turn'are attached to oppositeends' of elastic 40, which forms the rearmost portion of the belt.
The belt, when in position on the body of a wearer having a colostomy on the left side of his abdomen, will be positioned approximately as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Preferably in such case one vertical rib will be just a little in back of the outer edge of the left hip bone, while the other will be slightly to the right of the navel.
The belt is at once simple and comfortable and will stay firmly in position, even when the wearer engages in such activities as gardening, for example. In obtaining this firm positioning, the vertical ribs are important.
In order to put the colostomy belt on or off, the wearer will ordinarily open the two clamps along one edge. Whenever desired, the wearer can open all four of the clamps, thus exposing the colostomy and at the same time freeing the pad for whatever is necessary in the way of replacement of layers, etc. Thus, without removing the rest of the belt from the waist, it can be opened up completely, leaving nothing in the neighborhood of the colostomy, and any sanitary measures needed can be taken. The pad when in use is quite comfortable and soilproof.
In view of our invention and disclosure variations and modifications to meet individual whim or particular need will doubtless become evident to other skilled in the art, to obtain all or part of the benefits of our invention without copying the structure shown, and we, therefore, claim all such insofar as they fall within the reasonable spirit and scope of our claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A colostomy belt comprising strap structure passing around the rear of the waist and terminating to either side of the colostomy area, vertical positioning ribs attached thereto, one at each end-ct the strap structure, said ribs being long relative tothe vertical section of the ad jacent strap structure and protruding substantially toward the 'inside of the belt from the in side of the adjacent strap structure, fasteners attached to the vertical ribs, and a colostomy-pad removably held between the fasteners;
2. A colostomy {belt comprising strap structure passing around the rear of the waist to terminate on opposite sides of thecolosto'rny area,- a pair of vertical Epositioning ribs attached to the strap structure, one at each end of the structure, fasteners attached to the ribs, and a completely removable colostomy portion held between the fastenersand" having a'- disposable layer toward the colostomy and a strong impervious layer" away from the colostomy, which portion when in place at once coversthe colostomy and forms a necessary-structural part of the belt and when removed leaves the-colostomy completely open;
with no portion of thebelt in its immediate" liquely from thetop and bottom ends of eacli'rib to: the adjacent endbf the back portion.
'4; A fGOIOStOHiY b'elt comprising a single-strapior'm back-portion having loop-type connectors at either'ezrd', a colostomy portion, a, vertical rib on each sidejof the colostomy portion and attached thereto; and cloth strips attached to the respective ribs at both the top and bottom ends clamp at each end of each rib, and a colostomy pad removably stretched between the clamps, the whole being adapted to pass around the waist and protect a colostomy.
GL-A colostomy belt comprising an elastic strap, a pair of rings one at each end of the elastic strap}: spanof bands one passing through each ring, -apair of vertical rods each attached near its endsto the two endsvof a different one of the bands, clamps each attached toone of the rods near a diifere'nt end} thereof" on the side away from thering and-band, and'a colostomypad removabl'y" held' tn'e t'v veeri theclamps" and having, in the order of their nea'rness" to the'colost'omy,
