Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1906.
Application filed January' 15,1906. Serial N0. 296,197.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES GULICK, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mittens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in harvest-mittens.
The object of the invention is to provide a mitten of this character by means of which harvesting-work will be greatly facilitated and which may be comfortably worn by the operator.
A further object is to provide a mitten of this character which -will be strong and durable in construction and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the inner or palm side of a mitten constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the back of the mitten. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the back of the mitten is formed. Fig. 5 is a similar` view of the blank for forming-the palm and inner side of the iirst iinger and thumb of the mitten, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the blank for forming the outer side of the thumb.
Referring more articularly to the drawings, l denotes the back-forming piece or section which also has integrally formed therewith the back piece 2 of the separate finger of the mitten.
3 denotes the piece or section forming the palm portion of the mitten, and to said palmpiece is also integrally formed the inner and side piece 4 of the separate finger and the inner iece 5 of the thumb of the mitten.
T e inner and side of the main finger portion of the mitten is formed by a separate piece 6, which is adapted to be sewed to the upper edge of the palm-piece 3 and to the inner edges of the upper portion of the back iece l, as shown. The back of the thumb is formed by a separate piece 7, which is adapted to be sewed to the inner edge of the lower portion of the back piece and the outer edge of the inner thumbiece 5. The palm-piece 3 and the inner andp side of the separate finger-piece are adapted to be sewed to the inner edges of the back piece l and back iingerpiece 2, thereby forming a complete mitten with a separate iinger.
By constructing a mitten in the manner herein shown and described the usual inner side seam of the separate finger-piece and the main inner iinger-forming piece 6 are dispensed with, so that the places where theI most use is made of the mitten a smooth unbroken surface is provided, thus preventing injury to the fingers by the roughness of the seams usually employed at these points. This arrangement also affords a much stronger and durable construction than is to be had with seams which, owing to the rough usage the mittens are submitted to in harvesting-work, tend to rip at these points.
In arranging the piece 6, which covers the inner side of the main finger-piece portion of the mitten, the seam at the lower edge thereof which connects said piece with the palmpiece 3 is located opposite the palm-joints of the fingers, so that in bending the hand the seam will lie in the fullness of the material at this point and will thereby avoid all strain and will not be in a position to injure the hand.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Varions changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
