To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BRAZNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Im rovement in Folding Beds, of which the ollowing is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to folding beds, and more particularly to that class of folding beds which forms a davenport when in its closed position. In beds of this kind it is desirable to have the folding portion fold entirely across the main portion, so that when the said folding portion forms the back of the davenport it will be at the opposite side of the main portion to that in which'it is when In order to accomplish this, it is necessary to provide means for causing the folding portion to turn in its passage from its open to its closed position.
The object of my invention is to provide means for accomplishing such turning of the folding portion.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form of bed made in accordance. with my invention, Figure 1 is an end elevate. tion showing the bed in its closed position. Fig. 2 is an end view, on a reduced scale, showing the folding portion in an intermediate position between the open and closed position. Fig. 3 is an end elevation showing the bed in open position; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of one end of the bed, the folding portion being in open position.

10 represents the end piece of the main portion of the bed. Carried by this end piece 10 is a bed-bottom frame 11, which may be of any usual construction. Carried by the upper part of this bed-bottom frame 11 is a curved guideway 12, preferably formed of channel-iron. This guide, as clearly shown in the drawings, is arranged at one side of the center of the main ortion of one side thereof.
14 is the bed-bottom frame of the folding portion of the bed. This bed-bottom frame 14 carries a curved guide 15, similar to'the guide 12 and in alinement therewith," as shown in Fig. 4. These guides 12 and 15 are connected by means of two crossed flexible connections 16, preferably of wire. 17 is a link connecting the main and folding portions of the bed. This link 17 has one end pivoted at a point 18 to the bed-bottom frame 11 at the center of the curved guide 12, and at the other end it is pivoted at a point 19 to the bed-bottom frame 14 at the center of the curved guide 15. This link 17 causes the folding portion 14 to move in the arc of a circle from one side of the main portion to the other, and at the same time the curved guides 12 and 15 and the flexible connections 16 cause the part to turn so as to come in proper position when either open or closed.
Pivoted to the bed-bottom frame 14 at a point 20 isa; folding leg 21. The upper end of this folding leg 21 is connected by means of a link 22 to the link 17, hereinbefore described, so that when the folding portion is in its open position, as shown in Fig. 3, the link 22 will unfold the leg 21, so as to form a support for the folding portion, while when in the closed position the link 22 will fold the leg, as shown in Fig. 1, so that 'it will be entirely out of the way. In order to stop the folding portion 14 in position to form the back of the davenport, I place in the end frame 10 a pin 23, against which the said portion 14 strikes, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a folding bed, the combination with a main portion, of a folding portion adapted to swing from one side to the other of said main portion, a curved guide carried by said main fportion, and a curved guide carried by said olding portion and cooperating with said first-named guide to turn said folding portion as it is folded.
2. In a folding bed, the combination with a main portion, of a folding ortion adapted to swing from one side to tfie other of said main portion, a curved guide carried by said main portion, a curved guide carried by said folding portion, and flexible connections between said guides for turning said folding portion as it is folded.
3. In a folding bed, the combination with a main portion, of a folding portion adapted "to swing from one side to the other of said main portion, a curved guide carried by said a main portion, of a folding portion, a link main portion, a curved guide carried by said folding portion, and a pair of crossed flexible connections between said guides, whereby the folding portion is turned as it is folded.
4:. In a folding bed, the combination With a main portion, of a folding portion adapted to swing from one side to the other of said main portion, a link connecting said portions, a curved guide carried by said main portion, and a curved guide carriedby said folding portion and cooperating with said firstna'med guide'to turn said folding portion as it is swung on said link.
5. In a folding bed, the combination with a main portion, of a folding portion, a link connecting said portions, a curved guide carried by said main portion, a curved guide carried by said folding portion, and flexible connections between said guides for turning pail? folding portion as it is swung on said 1n 6. 8. In a folding bed, the combination with a main portion, of a folding portion adapted to swing from one side to the other of said main portion, a folding leg pivoted to said folding portion, a link connecting said main portion and folding portion, and a second link connecting said first-named link and said leg.
