WALLACE IE. HOUGI-i, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
GONNECTING-BRACE FOR THE LEGS OF CURTAIN-STRETCHING AND OTHER FRAMES.
integer.
Original application filed April 17, 1914, Serial No. 832,413.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVALLACE P. HoUGH, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Connecting- Braces for the Legs of Curtain-Stretching and other Frames, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The present application relates to a division of my former application for patent Serial No. 832,413, filed April 17, 1914, for improvement in curtain stretching frames.
The invention has for its objects, to provide the pivoted or hin 'ed leg of a curtain stretching frame with means connecting the same with the frame to limit the adjustment of said leg, to lock the same in its adjusted position to prevent the accidental verthrow of the frame rearward, and to brace the leg against side thrustitending to overthrow the frame in that direction.
With the above objects in view, the invention consists in certain features of construction, in certain parts and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described in this specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like detail parts are given like numerals and referred to by such in the description, said drawings representing the following views:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a portion of a curtain stretching frame with the improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of a portion of the frame, also showing the improvement applied thereto. Fig. 3 is an additional end elevation of a portion of the frame, having my improvement applied thereto, as it would appear with the leg folded. Fig. i is a perspective of the connecting brace plate.
In said drawings, the numerals 1 and 1 designate the top and bottom members, respectively, and 2 one of the end members, of a curtain stretching frame.
Pivotally connected, by a screw 8, to the upper outer portion of each end member of the frame, is a leg 4: for supporting the frame in an upright position. To each end member of the frame and leg is attached Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. f5, 1916.
Divided and this application filed November Serial No. 872,084.
my improved connectingbrace, said brace being formed of sheet metal and comprises the brace plate or body portion, preferably of approximately triangular form, having a turned over lug or short flange 6 at one side and a turned over flange 7 extending the length of the body at the other side. Both of these flanges project forward of the body portion, somewhat like that of the prongs of a fork, and are secured at opposite sides to the end member by a pin 8 passing through said member and the openings 9 of the flanges. The flange 7 of the brace extending rearwardly has formed therein. a longitudinally-disposed opening or slot 10, which terminates rearwardly in the shouldered portion 10, there being a screw 11 at the inner side of the leg which extends through said slot which slidably connects the brace to the leg.
In practice, when the leg is extended, the screw 11 limits the distance so extended to the length of the slot 1.0 of the brace within which it operates, after which, by a slight pressure exerted downwardly at the rear of the b ace, the said screw is caused to enter the shouldered portion of the slot, thus locks ing the leg in its extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, preventing possible closure or folding of the leg and consequent overthrowing of the frame rearwardly. To fold the leg flush with the end member, as shown in Fig. 3, the brace is slightly elevated at its rear, thus disengaging or displacing the screw 11 from the shouldered portion of the slot, after which operation the leg may be readily folded, causing the brace to fit flush with the rear and sides of the end member.
Having shown and described my invention, I claim:
1. A brace for the purpose set forth, comprising a fiat brace plate having oppositelydisposed turned-over flanges, one longer than the other and both extending forward of the fiat brace and each provided with an opening, the longer flange being further provided with a longitudinally-disposed connecting opening.
2. A brace for the purpose set forth, comprising a fiat brace plate having oppositelydisposed turned-over flanges, one longer than the other and both extending forward of the fiat brace and each provided with an opening, the longer flange being further provided with a longitudinally-disposed connecting opening terminating at one end in a shouldered portion.
3. The combination with the end member of a frame and a leg pivot-ally attached thereto, of a connecting brace plate comprising a body plate having oppositely-disposed turned-over flanges, one longer than the other and both extending forward of the body to and at each side of said end member and pivotally connected thereto, the longer and outer disposed flange of said "brace being adjacent the inner side of the leg and provided with a longitudinally-disposed opening terminating at its outer end in a shouldered portion, and a screw on the inner side of said leg which passes through the said flange opening to form a slidable connection with the brace plate, said brace adapted to limit the adjustment of the leg when extended, lock the same in place when so adjusted, and to adjust itself flush with the rear and sides of the member when the leg is folded alongside of said member.
4. A brace for the purpose set forth, comprising a flat brace plate of substantially triangular form having a pair of parallelsigned my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
