ERNEST OLDENBUSOH, OF HOBOKEN, NEV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO KRON- HEIMER d: OLDENBUSOI-I COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,872, dated April 15, 1902.
Application filed December S0, 1901. Serial No. 87.714. (No model.)
lb @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ERNEST OLDENBUscH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hoboken,in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames, of which the following is .a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in frames for pictures, show-cards, and similar articles, and more particularly to frames formed of sheet metal.
The object of my invention is to provide a practically dust-proof frame of cheap but durable construction. I attain this object by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a rear View of the frame with the back removed. Fig. 2 is a view of the separable back. Fig. 3 is a view of the frame with the back inserted complete, and Fig. 4c
is a cross-section on the line X X in Fig. 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throu ghout the several views.
A frame member c, in the form of a square or of any other desired conformation, is stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal in the usual well-known manner, or two. or more strips are joined, as may be preferred. This frame member is then bent so that the front and rear edges of the sheet metal project inwardly. The front edge thus forms a front stop f for the glass or picture and the rear edge a catch r for the back,l as hereinafter described. At two or more points ct a ct' a, between the corners a2 a2 a2 d2 of the above-described frame member, I cause the rear edges ot' the sides to ybend or curve or project inwardly.
A back b is stamped out ot' sheet metal and is provided with bent-over edges b b at each side, slightly converging and of a widtlrless than the distance between the front and rear edges f and r, respectively, of the frame member a, the outer measurements of this back b being slightly less than the inner measure# ment of the frame member a.
A picture p or other object which it is de sired to frame is placed within the box-baek b and preferably covered by a sheet of glass g. The converging edges b b of this back b 5o are then placed within the bent-over edges a cl/ of the frame member a, when a slight pressure applied to the back b will cause the back b to fall Within the frame member a, the parts a. a' u. d of which will engage the back and retain it in this position until it is desired to remove it, when a pressure applied to the back I) from the front will release it and permit the picture p to be removed.
A supporting-leg c ot any desired construction may be attached to the back, it desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In a device of the character described, the combination of a sheet-metal frame member a, the rearedges of the sides of which are bent inwardly and a back l1', provided with bent-over edges, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a sheet-metal frame member the front and rear edges of the sides of which are bent inwardly, the rear edges being also bent toward the center at points ina termediate of the corners, and a back, sub= stantially as shown and described. y
3. In a device 'of the character described, the combination of a sheet-metal frame mem# ber, the front and rear edges` of which are bent inwardly, the rear edge being also bent toward the center at points intermediate of the corners and a back member provided with converging bent-over edges, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 20th day of December, A. D. 1901.
ERNEST OLDENBUSOH.
