Description
No. 890,202. PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908.. A. TURNER. PICTURE FRAME.
APPLICATION FILED F3313, 190B- 'THE NORRIS PETERS Cm, WASHINGTON, 0.1:,
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST TURNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PICTURE -FRAME To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUsT TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi-' nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a s ecification.
The invention re ates, in general to picture frames, but pertains more in particular to a combined picture frame and shadow box.
One of the objects of the invention is to simplify and cheapen a picture frame of this character; a second object being to rovide a construction that is strong and urable, though employing fewer parts than heretofore used, and a third object is to construct a shadow box that is attractive, having the usual double frame appearance, and at the same time of considerable lessweight than frames heretofore constructed of similar character.
The invention will be hereinafter more fully described, and is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved frame Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view as Fig. 2', of a slightly modified form..
Referring now more particularly to the drawing,4 represents t e main frame for a picture, consisting of four sections suitably secured together, and adapted to have a picture 5 secured thereto. To the main frame 4 is secured a secondary frame 6 of larger dimensions than the frame 4, and ada ted to be secured together by means of a nai 7, or the like, to present the double frame appearance as shown in Fig. 1.
The two frames as just described are of the ordinary form, and heretofore to attach a shadow box thereto a complete box had to be constructed and secured to the secondary frame to obtain the black marginal back ground between the secondary frame and the shadow box. This construction necessitated a back for the shadow box, suitably colored, to which the two frames are secured.
Instead of constructing a complete back for the shadow box I secure the same effect in a new and novel manner, as follows: After the desired design has been formed upon the secondary frame, instead of sawing out the design, I blacken the margin between the outer edges of the design and secondary frame upon which it is formed. cured together and adapted to be secured to the secondary frame 6 by means of the nails 9, or the like.
In Fig. 2 10 represents the plastic beading to form a design, and the margin between the beading and the inner edge of the frame is suitably colored, such as by gilding, or the like.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of a device wherein the frame 4 has been oinitted, the picture and shadow box being secured to the frame 6. The desired shadow box effect is secured equally well in the modified form. If preferred a glass front 11 may be mounted in the front of the shadow box in the groove 12 therein.
It is obvious that all kinds and styles of frames may be constructed embodying my invention, without departing from the spirit thereof, and, therefore, without confining myself to the specific detail of construction.
I claim:
1. A picture frame having a suitable de sign thereon, a dark colored margin between the design and the outer edge of said frame, and a shadow box secured thereto, substantially as described.
2. A picture frame adapted to receive a picture and suitably colored, said color terminating short of the outer edge thereof, a dark margin along the outer edge thereof, and a shadow box secured thereto, substantially as described.
3. A picture frame adapted to receive a picture and having a design formed thereon, said design terminating short of the outer edge of said picture, a shadow box secured thereto, said shadow box and margin between said design and outer edge being of substantially the same color, substantially as described.
4. In a frame of the character described the combination of a main frame adapted to AUGUST TURNER...
