UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES CLIFTON FAUOETTE, 0F SEAROY, ARKANSAS.
CORNER-PIECE FOR PICTURE-FRAMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 19,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES CLIFTON FAUOETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Searcy, in the county of White and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner-Pieces for Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in picture frames and more particularly to an ornamental corner piece which may be readily applied to and removed from passe partout pictures, picture frames and thelike.
The object o the invention is to provide an ornamental corner piece of this character which may be applied without the use of nails, wires or other fastenings and which may be removed from the picture or frame without injury to the same or to the corner lece. p With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed,
and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a passe partout picture with my improved corner pieces applied; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail section on' the lane indicated by the line 33 in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a view of the inner or under face of one of the corner pieces.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a passe partout picture, a picture frame or the like, and 2 my improved ornamental corner pieces. As shown, the latter are of right angular form but they, may be curved or of other angular form according to the shape of the corner or edge upon which they are to be used. The corner pieces may also have any ornamental shape or configuration and may be constructed of any suitable material and ornamented in any desired manner, but I preferably stamp them from sheet metal and in some ornamental shape such, for instance, as the design illustrated in the drawing. To detachably retain the corner pieces upon the picture or frame 1 I provide two or more spring clips 3. I preferably employ two of said clips upon each corner piece and arranged one upon the rear face of each of the projecting arms or members 4 of the corner piece, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4.
While the clips may be formed integral with the corner piece if desired, I preferably make them from separate pieces of resilient sheet metal which are cut and bent to provide resilient tongues 5 and transversely extending attaching portions 6 which are right angular in cross section and are adapted to be soldered or otherwise united to the corner piece, as shown in Fig. 3. These right angular attaching portions or plates serve as guides and bearings to receive the edges of the picture or frame and they further serve to reinforce and strengthen the arms or members of the corner piece since they are comparatively long, as shown in Fig. 4. The resilient or spring tongues 5 are angular inshape and are adapted to press against the back of the picture or frame 1 and thus frictionally retain the corner piece thereon and at the same time permit it to be readily removed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the corner pieces are made as above described, they may be quickly and easily applied by anyone to passe partout pictures, plcture frames or the like and that no nails or similar fastenings are necessary. The spring clips effectively retain the corner pieces upon the picture or frame and at the same time permit the corner pieces to be readily removed so that the picture or frame may be cleaned or repaired or so that the corner pieces may be used upon a different picture or frame.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A corner piece of,the character described comprising a body having angularly projecting members and spring clips secured to the rear faces of said members, each of said clips being formed from a single piece of I resilient sheet metal having an angular attaching and reinforcing portion and a resilient tongue, said attaching and reinforc- I ing portion having its lower or inner flange secured to the body of the corner piece to 100 reinforce the same and its other flange pro- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my jecting outfwardly todengalge the edge 01f the signature in the presence of two witnesses.
icture 0r rame, sai resi ient tongue eing ormed upon the center of the outwardly CLIFTON FAUOETTE' 5 projecting flange of said reinforcing and at- Witnesses:
taching portion, substantially as and for J. B. LIGHTTE,
the purpose set forth. Jos. E. LIGHTTE.
