To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES D. GOLDEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Combined Easel-Snpport and Hanger for Picture-Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which corresponding letters of reference in the different figures indicate like parts.

My invention relates to the construction of a combined easel-support and hanger for picture-frames; and my object is to so construct said device that it may be easily, cheaply, and rapidly produced and rendered detachable, the same being so constructed that it may either be utilized as a hanger or easel-support, all of which is hereinafter more particularly described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of a picture-frame embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View thereof, taken upon the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view in detail of the locking device, taken upon the same line as that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a vertical sectional and face view, respectively, of the detachable hanger. Fig. 5 is a perspective view in detail of the brace or easel-support; and Fig. 6 is a side view of a picture-frame, showing the manner of utilizing my improved device as a hanger.

Referring to the drawings, or represents the back of a picture-frame, which is preferably constructed from sheet metal, said back being provided with rearwardly-projecting lugs or loops Z) b, which by preference are integral with said sheet-metal back, said loops being cut and formed therefrom by means of a suitable die. A detachable hanger c is constructed to engage said lugs, said hanger being provided with a loop portion 01 and a straight bar portion e. Said hanger is cut or severed diagonally, as shown at f, Figs. 1 and 4, and inasmuch as said hanger is intended to be made from sheet metal having more or less elasticity-such, for example, as sheet-brass--the parts may be separated upon the line f, so as to permit the bar (2 to be passed through the loops 1) b. In forming said hanger a short hook-like projection g, Fig. 4, is left at the end where the cut f is made, so that after passing the bar into the loops the hanger may be sprung sufficiently to cause said hook to pass into one of said loops, thereby not only locking the hanger firmly in place, but serving as one member of a hinge-bearingsurface when the loop is used as a hanger, as shown in Fig. 6.

In case it is desirable to support the picture as an easel it may be accomplished in the following manner: A brace or leg 72., having a wide base portion or feet 1' 2', as shown, is formed from sheet metal and bent at the upper end, as shown at j, at an angle to the main body it. At the junction between the body hand the party is a curved indentation k of sufficient depth to engage the bar 6 when the latter is passed through the loops 1) b, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In assembling and adjusting said device the indentation is placed in juxtaposition to said loops, when the hanger c is sprung into an abnormal position, so as to permit the bar 6 to pass through said loops, when said bar forms a hearing within the indentation it, thus enabling that portion of the brace to hinge therein. The projection j serves to limit the rearward movement of the brace, as shown in Fig. 2. It is obvious that the loops 0 may be attached to the back; but I prefer to make them as described.

Inasmuch as my improvement may be made entirely from sheet-metal stampwork, it is manifest that it may be made rapidly and very cheaply.

Having thus described my invention, I olaim- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of loops projecting rearwardly from the object to be supported and a hanger having a cross-bar adapted to pass through said loops, a loop portion and a hook or projection adapted to engage one of said loops and lock said bar in position, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of loops projecting rearwardly from the object to be supported, a detachable resilient hanger having a cross-bar adapted to pass through said loops, means upon said hanger for engaging one of said loops to lock said bar in position, and a brace having a bent portion adapted to pass between said bar and the object to be supported, said'bar forming a hinge-bearing for said bent portion, substantially as described.

3. The combination of a picture or other analogous frame, of loops projecting rearwardly therefrom, and the detachable yielding hanger 0, having a bar portion adapted to pass through said loops and a spring-actuated hook portion for locking the same in position, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination with a frame of the class described, of rearwardly projecting loops, the detachable hanger c and the brace h having the indentation 7c adapted to engage CHAS. D. GOLDEN.
