GEORGE F. SISBOWEBJ,'OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, AND LOUIS E. PITTONI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO NEW YORK COUCH BED COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,
A CORPORATION NEW YORK;
FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. SISBOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, and LOUIS E. PITTONI, a subject of the King ofItaly, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of our invention which we at present deem preferable.
For a detailed description of the present form of our invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of our bed in its open position;
Fig. 2 an end view thereof in its closed position and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the spring leg.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the main or stationary frame to which the folding frame B is jointed by links C, which may be described as an elevating or spacing link. The frame B when unfolded is on the same level as the-main frame, in that their spring fabrics are in line with each other to accommodate a double width mattress, and at its outer edge it is provided with spring legs D composed of two plates or sections (Z (P, the latter plate telescoping on the former with a spring (Z acting to extend the leg but yielding when the lower section strikes the floor as the frame B is unfolded. This serves to absorb the shock of the descending bed frame B as it unfolds. A wide mattress E, foldable in the center, covers both frames when the bed is unfolded anda half mattress E is secured to the under side of frame B, which, as that frame is folded, comes on top of both frames as shown in Fig. 2,'the mattress E at the same time being folded between the two frames, which are separated or spaced apart by link 0. Located at each end of the main or stationary frame A, are operating members, each comprising three radial arms 7, f and f formed with or attached to a socketed body portion f shaped to receive one end of a shaft F. The operating members are supported by reason of the arms f having a pivotal engagement with brackets f secured to frame A. Each arm f is pivotally attached to the frame B near the point ofpivotal attachment to said frame of link C, while the arm 7' is connected, by means of link 9 to a lever g? which is fulcrumed on the adjacent leg of frame A and connected at its opposite end to the lower part of leg D, by means of link 9 Assuming that the bed is unfolded as in Fig. 1, it is only necessary to lift the outer edge of frame B, when it will easily swing inward toward frame A and at the same time fold over to the elevated position shown in Fig. 2. When frame B is thus lifted at its outer edge, the arm f causes it to turn on its pivotal connection'with link C, while said link C also turns on its pivotal connection with frame A. This movement of the frame B, through its connection with arm f swings the operating member upon the eccentric pivotal connection between arm f and bracket 7, and causes arm f 'to push link 9 to the left, (Figs. 1 and 2), drawing link 9 and leg D inward by means of lever 9 until the said lever g strikes stop 9 A continuation of this action brings the parts to the condition shown in Fig; 2, wherein frame B has been lifted above frame 'A by the elevating link C, thereby allowing suilicient space between the two frames for the doubled mattress while the half mattress comes on top of both frames. When the parts are in open position, as illustrated in Fig. l, the links G cooperating with the arms of the operating members and the stop 9 form a rigid support for the inner edge of the frame 7).
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An improvement in folding beds comprising a main frame, an auxiliary frame, links movably connecting said frames and pivotally attached to both, and operating members for supporting the inner edge of the auxiliary frame when in open position, said operating means being pivotally supported by the main frame and having means adapted to cause the auxiliary frame to turn on its pivotal connectionswith said links during its movements to open or closed position.
2. An improvement in folding beds comprising a main frame, an auxiliary frame, links movably connecting said frames and pivotally attached to both, operating memhere for supporting the inner edge of the auxiliary frame when in open position, said operating means being pivotally supported by the main frame and having means adapted to cause the auxiliary frame to turn on its pivotal connections with said links during its movements to open or closed position, a foldable leg attached to the auxiliary frame, and operating connections between said foldable leg and said operating memher.
3. An improvement in folding beds comprising a main frame, an auxiliary frame, links movably connecting said frames and pivotally attached to both, a foldable leg attached to said auxiliary frame, and operating members pivotally supported by the main frame and connected with the auxiliary frame, said operating members having means for actuating said foldable leg.
4;. An improvement in folding beds comprising a main frame, an auxiliary frame,
links movably connecting said frames and pivotally attached to both, a foldable leg attached to said auxiliary frame, and operating members pivotally supported by the main frame and connected with the auxiliary frame, a lever pivoted to the main frame, a link connecting the lever and the foldable leg, and connections between said lever and said operating members.
5. An improvement in folding beds comprising a main frame, an auxiliary frame, links movably connecting said frames and pivotally attached to both, a foldable leg attached to said auxiliary frame, and operating members pivotally supported by the main frame and connected with the auxiliary frame, said operating members having means for actuating said foldable leg, and means for limiting the movement of said operating members and of said foldable leg.
6. An improvement in folding beds comprising a main frame, an auxiliary frame,
links movably connecting said frames and pivotally attached to both, brackets depending from the main frame, and operating members having arms pivotally supported by said brackets, said operating members having arms attached to the auxiliary frame adapted to cause the latter to turn on its pivotal connections with said links When moving to open or closed position.
7. An improvement in folding beds comprising a main frame, an auxiliary frame, links movably connecting said frames and pivotally attached to both, foldable legs attached to said auxiliary frame, and operating members, said operating members having radiating arms pivotally supported by the main frame, arms pivotally attached to the auxiliary frame and an arm operatively connected with each foldable leg.
8. A folding bed comprising a main frame, a folding frame hinged thereto, brackets depending from the main frame, folding legs carried by the folding frame, and a shaft having radial arms pivotally connected to the brackets, folding frames, and folding legs, respectively.
9. A folding bed comprising a main frame provided with depending brackets, a folding frame hinged to the main frame, folding legs carried by the folding frame, levers pivotally connected to the main frame and having links at each end, one set of links being connected to the folding legs, and a shaft having radial arms pivotally connected to the brackets, the folding frame, and the other set of links of the levers.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands, before two subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of June, 1913.
