PIPE-COUPLING RING Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed October 11, 1905. Serial NO. 282,248.
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pi e-Ooupling Rings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful lmprovements in coupling-rings by means of which the ends of pipes are joined.
The invention consists in the particular construction of the ring, which is made from sheet steel by means of suitable dies which cooperate to give the ring the form substantially as is herein illustrated.
The object of the invention is to simplify the manufacture as well as to expedite the manufacture of these devices and to provide a ring of the above type which possesses a high degree of durability or lasting qualities in addition to numerous other advantages possessed by said rin Preceding a detail description of the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a cross-sectional view of my improved pipe-coupling ring on the line a: a: of Fig. 2 Flg. 2 is a top plan view of the ring.
In a detail description of the invention similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
The pipe-c0upling ring which forms the subject-matter of this application is essentially constructed of pressed steel or platesteel of suitable thickness, depending upon the diameter of the ring. The said ring is pressed from a suitable blank of plate-steel y means of suitable dies and punches to give it the requisite formation. This formation consists of an annular ring or member, the greatest diameter 1 by a wall/i, which is slightly tapering and of which is inclosed terminates on one side in an inwardly-extending slightly-tapering wall 3, which in turn terminates at right angles in a flange 2, which surrounds an opening of less diameter than that surrounded by the wall 4. On the other side of the ring the wall 4 extends up wardly in a parallel wall 8, which provides an intervening space 5 between it and the wall 4, which is of a tapering form owin to the slight divergence of the walls 4 and 8 from the point at which they join. The wall 8 extends to a point approximately on a plane with the terminal of the wall 4, from which point it curves outwardly and thence downwardly in an outer flange or wall 6, there being suitable surface between the walls Sand 6 to provide a series of oblong holes 7. The space between the walls 8 and 6 is essentially somewhat greater than the cross-diameter of the holes 7, said cross-diameter of said holes being substantially uniform.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A pipe-coupling ring formed from a blank of sheet-steel and consisting of walls surrounding two openings of different diameters, the Wall surrounding the opening of greater diameter terminatlng in a parallel extension which curves outwardly in a third parallel wall or flange, the surface which joins the two outermost walls being provided with a series of openings, substantially as specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pipecoupling ring formed from a blank of sheetsteel and consisting of walls 4 and 2 surrounding openings of different diameters, the wall 4 terminating in a parallel wall 8, said wall 8 extending in an outer parallel Wall 6, the part intervening between the Walls 8 and 6 being of suflicient width for the provision of a series of openings 7, and the said wall 6 lying a substantial distance from the wall 8, sub stantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W. PRICE. Witnesses R. J. MoOARTY, O. M. THEOBALD.
