UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH STIFTER, JR, OF PITTS BURG,PENNSYLVANIA.
HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,621, dated December 9, 1902.
Application filed July 21,1902. Serial No. 116,312. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, JOSEPH STIFTER, J r., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hose-couplers, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a hose may be rapidly'and firmly secured together. r
Another object of my invention is to provide a hose-couplerwhereby screw-threads are dispensed with and provide'a coupling which will be water-tight and easily secured together.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hose-coupler that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its operation.
With the above and othervobjects in view the inventionconsists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinaftermore fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numeral of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of one part of my improved coupler. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the adjoining part. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the parts secured together and locked.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the neck of my improved coupler, to which the hose is secured in any suitable manner, and 2 represents. an enlarged flange formed integral with said neck, said flange being annular in shape and having flat sides 3, said sides being extended down a desired distance, as indicated at 4.
The reference numeral 5 indicates the lower portion of the neck, which carries a rubber gasket -6, and formed integral with the portion die the downwardly-extending portion 7.
Pivoted upon the flattened sides 3 is the lever 8, which carries the hook portion 9 and a handle 10. This handle is semicircular in form and has formed integral with it a similarhook'and lever, as shown in Fig. 1, this similar portion being secured to the upper side of the coupler.
The reference-numeral 11 indicates the lower portion of the corresponding coupler, I and upon this portion 11 is secured the hose.
The reference-numeral 12 indicates the upper portion of the corresponding coupler,
which has its sides cut away, as indicated at 14, and has an annular interior seat, as indicated at 15, forthe reception of the portion 5, carrying the rubber gasket 6 of the portion illustrated inFig. 1.
The reference-numeral 16 indicates an annular seat, which carries a rubber gasket 17, and upon this gasket rests the portion 7, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The reference-numeral 18 indicates a plate, which is secured upon the flattened side 19 of the portion 12 by means of screws 20, and this plate has formed integral therewith a pin 21, which carries a head 22.
The operation of my improved hose-coupler is as follows: It being desired to secure the hose-coupler together, the parts 7, 5, and 2 are forced into the parts 12 and 11 until the annular flange 2 rests withinthe cut-away portions 14, when the handle 10 is thrown down and the books 9 engage the pins 21, thereby locking the same.
While I have'shown the most practical embodiment of my invention,it will be obvious that various changes maybe made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hose-coupler, the combination of the two sections thereof, one of said sections being provided with a peripheral flange, said flange being formed with curved extensions, the other section receiving the inner end of the first-named section, and having its inner end provided with curved recesses, in which In testimony whereof I afii x my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH STIFTER, JR.
the curved extensions of the said flange are received, a pair of plates removably secured to the last-mam ed section, headed studs formed integral with the said plates, and levers car- I ried by the first-named section, said levers being provided with book portions to engage the said studs, substantially as described.
Witnesses:
JOHN N OLAND, E. E. POTTER.
