HOOK FOR SIGNAL DEVICES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Application filed June 5, 1906. Serial No. 320,293.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL FUCHS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hooks for Signal Devices, of which the following is a specifi cation.
This invention relates to hooks for signal flags and more particularly to coupling hooks for connecting the halyards to the flag, the object being to provide coupling hooks which can be easily and quickly con nected and one in which the coupling hook carried by the flag is provided with a letter representing the kind of flag to which it is attached, so that all liability of the flag accidentally becoming mixed is prevented.
WVith these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of constructi on, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flag showing my improved coupling hooks attached. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the coupling member showing the coupling hook provided with a letter inside the elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the coupling members showing the member with the swivel joint in side elevation. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the coupling hook adapted to be carried by the flag. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the coupling member separated carried by the halyard.
Referring to the drawing A, indicates the coupling members adapted to be carried by the flag and B the coupling member adapted to be carried by the halyard. The coupling member A, consists of an oval shaped plate having an opening formed in one end in which the end of the rope C, carrying the flag C, is adapted to be secured in the ordinary manner. A semi-oval shaped opening is formed in the other end of the plate having one of its side walls split adjacent the inner end of the edges of said split being beveled forming four sided pointed ends A.
A letter representing the flag to which the hook is to be attached is then cut out of the plate between the opening in the plate. I have shown the letter A formed therein but it is of course understood that any letter can be formed therein with the same results so as to represent the flag to which it is to be attached. The coupling member B, is formed of two semi-oval shaped plates B, B the plate B is provided with an opening having one of its side walls split, the edges of the walls formed by the split being provided with beveled edges forming four sided pointed ends which are adapted to be inserted through the similar pointed ends of the coupling member A, and lock the two together. An enlarged apertured portion B is formed on the lower end of the member B, through which the pin B of a similar portion formed on the member B is adapted to fit so as to form a swivel joint between the two members. The member B is provided with an opening in which the halyard D is secured in the ordinary manner.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided very novel coupling hooks for connecting the halyard to the flag so constructed that all danger of the member coming un-fastened is prevented, and one which is provided with an indicating letter so that all danger of the way flag being hoisted in signaling, is prevented.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is In a hook for a signal device, the combination with a coupling member adapted to be carried by the signal comprising an oval shaped plate having an opening for securing the signal, and a semi-oval shaped opening having its side walls split, the edges of said split being beveled forming foursided pointed ends, of a coupling member adapted to be carried by the halyard formed of two semi-circular shaped plates pivotally connected together provided with openings, the wall of one of said plates being split, the edges being beveled to form four sided pointed ends adapted to be interlocked together when turned at right angles to each other the faces of one member being adapted to pass the faces of the other member in a plurality of directions.
PAUL FUCHS.
