To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST J. JoNns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in flame-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hame-fasteners, and more particularly to improvements in my Patent No. 958,253, dated May 17, 1910.
In actual practice, when the device embodied in my former patent is applied to double teams, I have found that the pivotal bail, which constitutes the means for fastening the snap hook and the lever together, is frequently engaged by the breast-chain and constrained over the outer end of said lever, whereupon the latter is free to gravitate and result in a separation of the connections, and thereby defeating the very object for which this particular construction was devised.
It is therefore, the purpose of my present invention to obviate this inherent disadvantage by providing a fastening means which will positively inhibit any accidental disorganization of the hame-fastener.
To the accomplishment of the recited objects and others coordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in that construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and embodied within the scope of the appended claim.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hame-fastener embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lever disconnected from its companion snap-hook.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the views.
As in the case of my former patent, the invention comprises snap-hook members 1 and 2, and a lever 3, the member 1 being provided with a rack 4, and the member 2 and lever 3 being pivotally connected at 5, and otherwise arranged so that the trunnions 6 carried by the lever may be suitably adjusted in said rack.
The improvement resides in rabbeting the outer curvilinear terminal of the snap-hook member 2, as at 7, forming a depending projection 8 on the end of the rabbeted portion, and constructing the outer proximal Specification of Letters Patent.

end of the lever 3 with an aperture 9, to permit the projection 8 to extend therethrough. A lug 10 is fashioned on the end of the lever and extends laterally in the same plane as the projection 8. Both the lug and projection have transverse openings 11 and 12, respectively, connected by a chain 18, the latter being permanently secured to the lug 10'and detachably fastened to the projection 8 by the hook let.
As exhibited in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the hame-fastener is in the position that it would assume when applied to the ends of a pair of hames, with the outer terminal of the lever 3 resting flush contiguous the rabbeted portion 7 of the snap-hook member 2, and the projection 8 extending therethrough and fastened by the hook 14.
When it is desired to disconnect these elements, the hook 14 is withdrawn from the projection 12, whence the snap-hook and lever can be easily separated, as will be readily seen upon inspection of Fig. 2.
WVith this fastening means in operation, all possibility of the same becoming disengaged by the breast-chain is precluded. Furthermore, if the outer curved terminal of the lever 3 should have any tendency to slightly oscillate from its relative flush position with the snap-hook 2, that portion of the lever on either side of the aperture 9 will impinge against the hook l4 and hold it securely against the wall of the opening 11 in the projection 8.
It should be understood that in its broader aspects my invention comprehends the employment not only of the means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions. IVhile the arrangement shown is thought, at the present time, to be preferable, it is desired to reserve the right to effect such modifications and variations thereof as may come fairly within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a hame-fastener, the combination of a pair of snap-hooks, a lever pivoted to one of said snap-hooks, means for adjusting the lever and the other snap-hook, said first mentioned snap-hook having its outer terminal cut away, an apertured projection formed integral with and extending from the extreme end of said cut away portion, the outer end of said lever being curved and adapted to fit in said cut away portion and lie flush with the outer edges and top sur- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing and its other end adapted for detachable 10 engagement With the aperture of the first mentioned projection.
