Description
"una ma gaat am AUSTIN z.. MASON AND RICHARD Ri RoRBINs on ADRIAN'MIGHIGAN, Y l.issIeNoRs To RICHARD R. RoRRINs.
Letters Patent No. 82,014, dated September 8, 1868.
IMPROVED VISE.
TO ALL` WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that we, AUSTIN Z. MAsoN and RICHARD B. RoRBINs, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bevel vise-Jaws; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication, like letters referring to like parts.
The nature of our invention consists in a new, simple, and practical mode of constructing bevel vise-jaws, so arranged that they may he used either as a positive parallel jaw, or be Vturned at any desired angle to'clamp wedge-shaped pieces, the samebeing intended as an improvement on Austin Zn. Masons improvement in vise, `mentainpnl 2e, 1868, patent No. 77,390.
In the drawings- Figure 1 represents a view of our improved vise-jaw attachments, taken on a. horizontal line atright angles with the vise-screw, the jaw being represented as placed parallehto clamp a parallel piece.
Figure 2 represents a view of the vise-jaw from .the same direction, with the movable jaw turned at an angle, to clamp a wedge-shaped piece. v
4Figure 3 is a perspective view ofthe washer-plate B and' adjustable ring C.
Figure 4' is a. perspective view ofthe semispherical bilge D, face-plate D., and wooden disk E. I
Figure 5 represents a side View of the two parts shown in iig. 3.
Figure 6 represents a side view of the semi-annular ring K.
In the main, this invention is similar to that of Masons patent vise previously mentioned,'d iii`ering from it only as herein set forth and described. i
The ring C has, on its, back side, a short hub, to tit into and keep it c'eutral on the plate B, and on the other side, the ring C is faced o by two equally-inclined planes x y,'whose Obliquity to the plane of the back side of'th'e ring is equal to the greatestpossible angle to which the jaw is designed to turn. v
The opening through the centre of the ring is concave,so as to turn or rock uponthe spherical bilge D of the faceplate D, the ringhaving no handle.
To the face-plate D isattached, if desirable, a wooden disk, E, to adheretc the surface of the piece clamped.
On opposite sides of the spherical bilge D are ribs m and 1t, (fig. 4,) to t into vcorresponding recesses m and n', (iig. 3,) so as to allow a rocking and prevent aswivcl movement of the face-plate D upon the ring C, thus causing the ring to turn whenever the face-plate D is turned. Y i
The ring C. is also provided with projecting stops c and e, which strike against similar stops a and b ofthe washer-plate B. These stops are designed to prevent the ring C, and, therefore, the face-plate D', from revolving more than one-fourth of a circumference, and in order to secure'the requisite strength, `the two stops c and e may be combined in one, and the two stops aand b made any desirablesize.
The spherical bilge D, ring C, washer-plate B, and movable jaw A, are all held together in working order, as shown in tig. Il, by any suitable bolt.
It isl evident now, from the description already given, that Awhen thus constructed and brought into working order, the operator may, by grasping the face-plate E 'with the hand, turn it and the ring C simultaneously onefourth of a circumference, and may rock it one way and the other, so as to receive and .clamp a wedged or parallel piece. I
It', now, he wishes to convert it into a positive parallel jaw, he has only toidrop the 'semifannxlar ring K, having parallel sides, into position, as shown in fig. 1, the ends of the ring K resting ou the projecting stops a and b. By this means, the upper half of the face-plate D basa. positive or solid bearing 'against the ring K, and the ring, a like bearing against the washer-plate B, thus furnishing the mechanic with a safe, simple, and solid parallel vise-jaw. By removing the ring K, and properly adjusting the face-plate D', any wedge-shaped piece may, with equal facility, rbe clamped and held invposition.
Having thus described our invention, what we cleimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. In combination with the ring C, constructed with the oblique faces and y, the recesses m and tf1/,and one or'more projecting stops c and e, to prevent it from turning more than one-fourth of a circumference, the whole constructed in the manner substantially as set forth and described.
2. The spherical bilge D, Iwith one or more ribs m and h, or their equivalents, in combination with the ring C, constructed substantially as set forth and described.
3. The semi-annular, ring K, in combination with the vring C and washer-plate B, substantially as described.
RICHARD B. ROBBINS, AUSTIN Z. MASON.
