Patented July 4, 1867.
gain gums gaunt @ffinn.
ISAAC CFTATE, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 65,449, dated June 4, 1867.'
IMPROVEMENT IN VISES FOR. HOLDING WOOD.
TO ALL WHOM IT CONCERN:
Be it lcnown that I, ISAAC C. TATE, of New London, New London county, Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Parallel 'Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. i
The drawing represents a perspective view of my invention.
The-object of this invention is "to adjust parallel vises, of any suitable construction, to the use of carvers and others who, have to work on different sides of the article held in the vise, and consists in mounting the vise upon a universal joint, so that it can be turned and inclined to any desired degree, thereby enabling the turning of the artiolein the vise'to light or to the front ofthe operator, or to any desired'position. For carvers especially this invention is of great value, as heretofore they were obliged, when holdingtheir work in an upright plank-clamp, to twist themselves, while with my improvement they are enabled to turn the worl; so that it is in the mostconveriient position for them. i
A represents a square conical shank of an arm, 13, which is made of cast iron, or other suitable material. By the shank or by any other suitable device, the said arm is secured in a bench or table in which a corresponding mortise is provided. To the side of the arm 13 is hinged an arm, G, and on the upper part of both arlns B and C is formed a cup or full semi-spherical shell I), which can be opened or closed'hy turning the arm 0 on its pivot a. A set-screw, b, passing through the lower part of the arm C, can be used to firmly close the cup 1). The vise, which is made of any suitable form, material, or shape, and which, in the drawing, is represented to consist of a stationary jaw, E, and sliding-jaw F, the latter being operated by a slip-handle, c, in the usual manner. To the lower side of the jaw E, or of its appendages, guides, 360., is secured or firmly east therewith, a ball, G, as is clearly shown in the drawing This hall is inserted in the cup D, and it is evident that the clamp can now be turned in anydirection, and be held therein by clamping the sides of the cup D against the ball G.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The universal joint D, constructed as described, consisting of the shank A, arm B, to which the cup lever C is pivoted and adjusted by means of the set-serew 6, adapted to support and adjust the hall G in any desirable position, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
ISAAC C. TATE.
