@when glatte gaten-t @nfima Aus-TIN Z. MASON, or ADRIAN, MICHIGAN', .-issiGNon 'ro H'I-'MSELF AND RICHAFU) B. RGBBINS, 0F SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 77,390, dated April 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN- VISE. i
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY- CONCERN:
Be it known that I', AUSTIN Z. MASO, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee, and State of Michigan, have' invented a new and useful Improvement in Bevelvise Jaws; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of thesame', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use my inventionreference being had to the annexed drawings, and te the lettersof reference marked thereon, making,r 'a'part of this specification, like letters referring to like parte.
In the drawings--- v v Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a bevel-vise jaw embodying xny invention.
Figure 2 represents a vertical section.
Figure 3 represents a perspective view of the lthree several parts of my improved bcvel-vise jaw, when" slightly separated.
A represents the movable jaw. F represents the stationary jaw. B represents a. washer-plate, attached to the movable jaw A. C represents an adjustable rinf. A I
This ring has, on its back side, a short hub, t, to fit into-the opening in thek washer-plate B, anden the other side thea-ing. C is formed by two equally-inclined planes, :c and y, whose vObliquity to the plane ofthe back side of the ring is equal to the greatest possible bevel which the jaw is designed to clasp.
The opening through' the centre of the ring is concave, corresponding to the semispherical bilge D on the face-plate D.' By means of a'handle, L, the ring may be readily turned around aiquarter circumference, thus causing the face-plate D to rock either way down upon the inclined planes z and 1l, thus giving anyf-desired angle'toV the facie-plate D.
To thev face-plate D is attached, if desirable,` a wooden disk, E, to intervene between theface-plate Di and the'wedged-shaped piece W to be clamped.
In order t'o clam'p the bevelled or wcdgeshaped piece W inverted, you have only to unscrew the 'screw S, take out the wedge, and turn'tbe edge,^ncarcst you, ofthe face-plate D back againstthe inclined plane :1: of the adjustable ring C, invert the wedge, and place itt-bach in the vise, and tnrn up the screw.
If you wish to place the wedge in the vise in an .oblique position, withy the thick endk either up or down, you have only to turn the'handle, la, of the adjustable ring, C, up until the lline of intersection ofthe two planes a: and y shall reach. a. horizontal position, when the wedge can be readily clamped as before, in the manner desired.
A bolt, P, holds the face-plate D andvadjustable ring C in working position with the movable jaw A, and the two prongs m and n, and projection o of the face-plate D', prevent the latter from a. rotary motion around the bolt P. i i l i Having thus described my invention, what I claim asncw, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. I claim the adjustable ring C, constructed with oblique faces x y, and a handle, it, for turning it on its axis, to adapt it to impart'any desired set to the face-plate Di,'in.`the manner and for the purposes set, forth.
2.. I cla-im, in combination with the adjustable ring C,`the washer-plate B, and the face-plate D', with its spherical bilge D, all constructed in the manner set forth and described.

KATE HILL, J. E. TooKER.
