VISE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN HOGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitz gerald, in the county of Ben Hill and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Vise, of which the following is a specifica tion.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved vise and the invention aims primarily to provide a vise which may be readily and quickly adjusted to hold the work at any desired angle.
The invention aims further to provide a vise in which the fixed and movable jaws will be connected in a novel manner designed to rigidly connect them at any desired relative adjustment.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a side elevation of a vise constructed in accordance with the present invention, the fixed and movable jaws of the same being shown at one adjustment in full lines and at another adjustment in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view from front to rear therethrough. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the movable jaw of the vise. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one section of the body of the vise.
In the drawings the vise is illustrated as embodying, in its structure, a support having a body comprising connected sections indicated by the numeral 10. These sections are of counter-part structure and are provided each with several attaching lugs 11 by means of which the sections may be secured to a bench or the like. Near their lower ends, the sections have secured through them a connecting screw 12 and at a point above this screw, a clamping bolt 13 is engaged through the sections and has threaded upon it a clamping nut 14:, it being intended that this nut shall be rotated in order to close the sections in clamping relation. The sections are socketed in their abutting faces as at 15 and are recessed as at 16 in their said faces whereby when the sections are disposed with their faces abutting, a substantially spherical socket will be afforded while in continuation of said socket will be formed a recess extending through an area of ninety degrees. The top face 18 of the body is fiat as well as is the forward face 19 and these faces are in a plane tangential to a rounded or convex face 17, intermediate said faces Specification of Letters Patent.

18 and 19. The purpose of this construction will presently be made clear. The rounded surface 17 is concentric with the center of the socket 15.
The vise embodies a fixed jaw indicated by the numeral 20 and having a fiat face 21 disposed against the body 10. This base 21 carries a stem 22 having a spherical head 23 which stem projects through the slot 16 with its head 23 fitting movably in the socket 15. It will be readily understood at this point that the base 21 may be adjusted angularly about the pivotal center of the stem and about the longitudinal axis of said stem to various positions upon the faces 17 line position so as to assume a different adjust-ment. In fact, the base may be so adjusted upon the three faces of the body as to assume practically any angular position with respectto any of the said three faces. By tightening the clamping nut 14, the fixed jaw is of course held at adjustment. A nut 24: spans a bore 25 which is formed in the body of the fixed aw 20 and is substantially semi-cylindrical, and this nut is formed with a threaded opening 26.
The movable or adjustable jaw of the vise is indicated by the numeral 27 and is formed with a semi-cylindrical sleeve shank 28 slidably fitted in the bore 25 of the fixed jaw and formed with a slot 29 receiving one end of the nut 24:. An adjusting screw 30 is swiveled as at 31 in the upper end of the adjustable jaw 27 and projects down through the sleeve 28 and is threaded adjust ably through the opening 26 in the nut 24:. At its upper end, this adjusting screw 30 is provided, with the usual head 32 carrying the usual hand bar 33 which may be grasped for the purpose of rotating the adjusting screw and thereby adjusting the movable jaw with respect to the fixed jaw.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that by placing a piece of work between the fixed and movable jaws and then adjusting these jaws to clamping position, the clamping nut 14 may be loosened and the work adjusted to any angle desired whereupon the clamping nut is tightened to hold the fixed and movable jaws at this adjustment.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a vise including a jaw carrying base, of a support including a body having opposed sections provided with registering recesses forming a socket, one corner of the body being rounded to form a surface concentric with the center of the socket, there being a slot Within said round-1 ed surface and opening into the socket, said slot extending through 90, said body hav-'; ing flat faces in planes tangential to the; rounded surface, a stem projecting from the; base of the vise and adapted to bear againstl either end Wall of the slot, a spherical head on the .stem, said stem being adapted to swing and rotate in the slot to adjust the base angularly about the pivotal center and the axis of rotation respectively of the stem, and means for binding the body sections upon the head to hold the stem and base against movement.
