Description

. UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
IM'PRovEo PLANERS CHUCK.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No.v 75,498, dated March 10, 1868.
ication, in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the entire chuck. Fig. 2 represents a side or longitudinal view. Fig. 3 represents and shows a transverse section.
'.lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe'its'construction and operation more in detail.
The letters A B represent the entire chuck. C (l represent adjustable pins, fitted and usedv in holes D'D upon the bed-plate. E E E E represent adjustable pieces, which are used in some instances to avoid turning the set-screws in CO. F is a handle attached to bolt I'. G G is an independent and sliding jaw. H H represent a side latch fastened to G G. K K are pieces attached to, by screws marked L L L L, the jaw G G, making its gibs. M M are set-screws in pins O C. N N N are hollow spaces in the bed-plate. O is the pin upon which the chuck revolves, as desired.
Having referred to letters, I will now de-r scribe i-ts constructiorrand operation.
I I construct the sliding and adjustable jaws G gibbed on in such a manner as to conform to regular or irregular pieces, asmay be desired. The handle F, screwed onpbolt I, when turned to the left, fastens the jaw, so as to prevent the jawfrom springing when hard pressed against by lscrew M in pin O. When the operator desires to hold a large or small piece he takes out pins G G, moves handle F back,l
slides the jaw to the desired position, places pins G C as near tojaw G G as he can, and, if desired, he slips the adjustable blocking E, one or more pieces, in the path of screw M M in pins GO, thus avoiding much delayin turning the screws. i v
It is often desirable to apply the power that retains the work higher ror lower. With my method it is easily accomplished, simply by raising or lowering the pins. If the operator desire to hold a larger piece than can be admitted between the jaws, he takes out pins C C, slips off jaw G G, replaces pins O C, as desired. If the piece is angular,he turns the pin so as to have a directbearing. It is often desirable to hold a thin piece as lightly as possible to prevent its springing. This I in part accomplish by raising the latch H H, which prevents it from slipping endwise.
I construct my chuck in such a manner that it can be readily taken apartto clean or repair. I construct it in such a manner as to have spaces for the dirt and chips to fall into, as N N N, and from which they can be easily Iemoved.
Thehandle F and bolt I are used to keep the jaw from springing, and also, when tightened, to take a part of the strain oft' of the gibs. It will be seen that by moving the handle to the left it tightens the jaw G, and the handle is convenient to draw the jaw to and from the work. When there is any wear in the thread or handle it is easily tightened by slipping off the jaw and turning the bolt I more or less, as desired. Thus itis easily adjusted.
I construct the chuck in such a manner that with the same or less weightit is strongerand less liable to get out of repair than those now used.
WhatIclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved planers chuck herein described, when its several parts are constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
2. The sliding jaw G, having the slotted blocks E E attached thereto, in combination with bedplate and set-screws, all constructed as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The subject-matter of second claim, in combination with the movable pins C G, when arranged to operate in the manner substantiallyv as specified.l
