Description
E. LINK.
HAND OPERATED KEY SEATING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 28, 1908.
Patented 0613.20, 1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK LINK, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
HAND-OPERATED KEY-SEATING- MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK LINK, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Hoboken, Hudson county, State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Operated Key-Seating Machines, of'which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to a hand-operated key-seating machine, the object being to provide a machine of this character that can be set up on a bench or transported for eld work.
To these and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention comprises the novel features of improvement and arrangement of parts which I will now proceed to describe and linally claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, whereinl Figure 1 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of my improved key-.seating Inachine, the section being taken on a line a-cz in Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is an end View of my improved machine, looking from the left in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view looking from the right in Fig. l.
In the accompanying drawing a suitable frame is illustrated by the numeral l. The frame 1, in this instance, is provided with guide-ways 2 which fit into the grooves 3, of a longitudinally movable reciprocating slide 4. The under side of the slide 4 is provided with a rack 5, with which a pinion 6 meshes. The pinion 6 is carried by a shaft 7, which is in turn suitably carried by the frame 1, as shown. For operating the pinion 6 a leverhandle 8 is provided.
To the slide 4, at about the position indicated by 9, I pivotally secure the butt-end of a tool-bar 10, the forward end of the said tool-bar being provided with a removable cutting tool 11, the said tool being held in position by a set-screw 12. The under side of the tool-bar l1, intermediate the ends thereof, rests upon an adjusting block 13, the bottom of said block being tapered, as at 14, to coincide with the tapered portion 15 on the slide 4. To move the block 13 backward or forward, a spindle 16, is provided, which, at its forward end, passes through the block 13 and is rotatably held in position by a collar 17 and a nut 18. The opposite end of the spindle 16 is threaded, as at 19, and engages a threaded opening 20 in the p Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led February 28, 1908.
Patented oct. 2o, 1908.
serial No. 418,207.
One o f the chief features of my improved key-seating machine is the radially adjustable face-plate 25, the frame 26 of which is pivoted to the frame 1 as at 27. Atthe bottom of the said face-plate 25 I have, in this instance, provided an adjusting screw 28 and a binding screw 29. By means of the adjusting screw 28, which is threaded and engages a threaded opening 30 in the frame 1, I can cause the frame 26 and face-plate 25 thereon, to swing outwardly or inwardly, at the bottom thereof, whereby the said faceplate, and object thereon, can be squared or trued with respect to the tool 11, in other words, if the bore 31 of the pulley 32, for instance, should not be square with respect to the face of said pulley, the adjusting screw 28 can be manipulated to throw the center-line 33 upwardly or downwardly, whereby the said bore 31 can be brought to a horizontal or square position. After having squared the work upon the face-plate 25, in the manner described, the face-plate can be bound or set by means of the bindingscrew 29. The face-plate 25 is provided with a plurality of openings 34 which adapts the face-plate for various styles and dimensions of work. To secure the work in place,
on the face-plate 25, any suitable clamping means can be employed, the clamping device herein shown being a well known form.
To cut a key-seat the pinion 6 is rotated, by turning the handle 8, in a direction to cause the slide 4 to move toward the faceplate 25 far enough to cause the tool 11 to impinge the metal surrounding the bore 31 and to pass completely through the said bore. The extent of the cut of the tool 11 while passing through the bore will be determined by the adjusting-block 13. While the slide 4, and tool-bar 10, are returning by reversing the pinion 7, the tool 11 will knock down and the butt-end of the bar 10 will rise, a slot 35 being provided in the tool bar for this purpose, the block 13 acting as a fulcrum. When a new cut is to be taken the forward end of the bar 10, and tool 11, can be advanced by the block 13, to take a deeper cut. 1
Having noW described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a key-seating machine, a reciprocating slide, a tool-bar pivoted, at one end thereof, to said slide, said pivoted end being adapted for a transverse movement upon the pivot therefor, a cutting tool carried by said tool-bar, a slidable block carried bysaid slide having a rounded top in contact With said tool-bar, a spring carried by said slide adapted to keep said bar in contact with said block,` andy means adapted to slide said block to advance the tool carried by said tool-bar.
2. I'nY a key-seating machine, a reciprocating slide, a tool-bar, provided in one end thereofwithV an elongated slot, said slot being at a right angle to the cutting neovenient of said bar, a pivot pin carried by said slide adapted to pass through said slot, a cutting tool carried by said bar, an adjust able block carried by said slide adapted to raise said bar to advance the tool carried thereby, said block also constituting a fulcrum point for the oscillation of said bar, when said bar is returning from a cutting operation, and a spring carried by said slide adapted to reset the bar after said bar has
