Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. l
JOHN T. OGDEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
I-IANLDE FOR VISES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,366, dated March 4, 1856.
To all whom it may concern:
y Be it known that I, JOHN T. OGDEN, o Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Handle for Operating the Jaws of Vises, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of a vise with my improvement; Fig. 2, a rear view o-f the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the same.
In vises as ordinarily constructed when the handle passes through the head of the screw, it often happens that the handle is in the way either of the article to be operated upon or of the body of the workman, to avoid which inconvenience is the object of my present invention which consists in uniting the handle to the screw head by means of a swivel joint, by means of which the handle may be turned in either direction in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the screw as readily as in the old vises, and in addition it may be thrown into a position parallel with the screw, or making any desired angle therewith.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the accompanying drawings A is the stationary; B the movable jaw, the latter being attached to and making part of the sliding bar C, which is slotted longitudinally through its center to accommodate the screw D, and its nut E, the latter together with the stationary jaw A, being secured to the bench F, by the screw G. The screw D, is secured to the movable jaw. by the flange a,
and screw b, or in other suitable manner, so that the jaw shall move longitudinally with the screw in either direction, while the latter revolves freely within the jaw.
The handle H is forked at g, a pin f, passing through the fork and the sphere I, upon the screw D. A flexible joint is thus produced betweeny the handle and the screw head, which enables me to revolve the handle upward of 180o in planes passing through the axis of the screw. The handle may t-hus be operated or placed out of the way of the opi erator or his work in a great variety of positions which t-he handles of vises as heretofore constructed are incapable of assuming.
In large vises for heavy work the handle has been made detachable from the screw head and is inserted when the vise is to be operated, and laid by after the object has been clamped; this is objectionable for the reason that the handle or lever used for the purpose has to be sought for among the tools upon the bench each time it is required7 which occasions considerable delay and loss of time. My improved handle is not liable to the above inconvenience while it equally with the detachable lever removes those objections, to which the old vise handle is liable.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Uniting the vise handle with the head of the screw, by means of the swivel joint op erating in the manner substantially as herein set forth.
