MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1906.
Application tiled August 16, 1905. Serial No. 274,257. i
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MAUssNER,
a subject ofthe German Emperor, residing at i Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in io mattresses, and particularly to mattresses used in the sick-room or hospital.
The object of my invention is to construct a sanitary mattress which will protect the patient and which ma be readily taken i 5 apart and cleansed and ried.
In my improved mattress the lower or main mattress portion is protected b v a vfaterproof covering, and above said waterproof covering is rovided a thick porous mat zo through which the exudations from the body of the patient may percolate and be collected by the said waterproof covering of the main mattress ortion. The porous mat is of sufcient thickness to kee the patient above z 5 the moisture that is coliicted upon the said water roof covering.
Re erring to the drawings, Fi ure 1- is a perspective view of myl improve mattress, showing a ortion of t e same broken or in 3o sections. ig. 2 is a sectional View of a portion ofthe mattress, as on line 2 2, Fi 1.
In the drawings, A represents a tic which incases the parts com rising the mattress. The tick has a remova le to a, secured to 3 5 the side ieces a. by means of uttons a?, carried by t e said side ieces. The piece a has a blind fold as, in w ich are yformed the but'- tonholes, so that the buttons will not show.
The main mattress portion B of the mat- 4o tress is constructed in the usual manner of making mattresses. A protecting-cover C, of water roof material, is used to protect the said main mattress ortion B from any injury by moisture. he waterproof covering C may be lmade in the form of a casing to inclose the main mattress portion B, as shown, or a waterproof draw-sheet may be used to protect the main mattress portion instead of the casing without departing from my inven- 5o tion.
Above the waterproof covering C is the porous pad D,which may be made of felt, ber, or interwoven hair, but preferablythe latter, to permit the water to readily pass through the pad D to the waterproof covering U,
where it will be retained until the mattress can be taken apart and cleansed.
The advantages of my invention. are that by arranging the different parts of the mattress as above described the main mattress portion will be protected Jfrom injury by moisture, the waterproof covering will collect the water, and said covering may readily be removed and dried, and the porous pad is of suilicient thickness to raise the patient above the waterproofcovering to prevent the body of the atient from coming in contact with the moisture upon the said waterproof covering.
My improved mattress is particularly adapted for general use, as it can be manufactured at a small cost. A cheap vegetable fiber may be used for lling the main mattress portion, which when used in connection with the interwoven hair pad will have the effect of a hair mattress and can be made at a much lower cost than a mattress made entirely of hair. t
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination in a mattress, of a porous ad, a main mattress (portion, a waterproo covering between sai porous pad and said main mattress portion, and a tick to incase the above-mentioned parts, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a mattress, of a porousfpad, a main mattress portion, a waterproo covering to incase said main mattress portion and protect the same, said porous pad bein of suflicient thickness to raise the patient'a ove said waterprf of covering, and a tick to incase said abovementioned parts to comdplete the mattress, substantially as describe 3. The combinationin a mattress, of a porous ad, a main mattress ortion, a waterproo covering between sai porous pad and said main mattress portion, a tick to incase said above-mentioned parts, and said tick having a removable top, substantially as describe In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK MAUSSNER. 4
