BILL-FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed A ril r1905. Serial No. 263,286.
To all wiumt it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PLEASANT T. LEMAs- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spartanburg, in the county of Spartanburg and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention has relation to bill-files; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a file for holding bills, papers, 620., which is-simple and cheap in construction and the parts of which are so arranged that any particular bill or paper upon the file may be easily and readily removed without disturbing the order of arrangement of the other bills or papers.
The invention consists primarily of a piece of steel-spring wire provided with a means whereby it may be attached to a wall or other stationary object. The ends of the said wire are pointed and extend generally toward each other. Immediately behind the point of each end of the wire is located a groove and an eye, the groove and eye of one end being adapted to receive the groove and eye of the opposite end when the two ends of the wire are locked together. Also either eye may be used for holding a piece of cord or twine upon which the bills or papers may be passed from the file.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bill-file. Fig. 2 represents a group showing the upper and lower ends of the wire, and in said group, a is a front elevation of the lower point of the wire, I) is a longitudinal sectional view of the lower point of the wire, 0 is a longitudinal sectional view of the upper point of the wire, and d is a rear elevation of the upper point of the wire. .Fig. 3 is a front elevation illustrating one means for attaching the bill-file to the wall, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation illustrating a modified means for attaching the billdile to the wall.
The bill-file consists of a spring-wire 1. Said wire is preferably made of steel. The upper portion 2 of the said wire 1 is curved substantially in the form of the are of a circle and is provided at its lower end with an in wardly-inclined point 3. Immediately above said point 3 is located an eye 4, and above the 1 said eye 4 and leading into the same and 10- l cated upon the inner face of the wire is a groove 5. The lower portion 6 of the bill-file 1 is bent toward the front and merges into the portion 7, which is so positioned under tension from the curved portion 6 as to normally incline away from the upper portion 2 of the wire 1, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The upper end of the portion 7 is provided with outwardlyinclined pointed end 8, and immediately below the said pointed end S is located an eye 9, and immediately below the said eye and extending down in the outer side of the portion 7 is a groove 10.
In the form of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 the wire 1 is split longitudinally at the point 11 and may receive the head of a nail attached to a wall, (not shown,) whereby the bill-file is supported upon the wall. In the form of the invention as illustrated in Fig. 4 the wire 1 is not split, but is twisted into a loose knot 12, which is adapted to receive the nail in the manner as above described for the split portion 11.
WVhen the ends of the portions 2 and 7 are interlocked, the point 3 of the portion 2 enters the eye 9 of the portion 7 and the point 8 of the portion 7 enters the eye 4 of the portion 2. In the operation of interlocking the grooves 5 and 10 serve as guides for directing the points 3 and 8 into the eyes 9 and 4, respectively. It will thus be seen that when the ends of the portions 2 and 7 are interlocked the points 3 and 8 are concealed, and the bills may be passed from the portion 6 along the portion 7 and upon the portion 2 without interference on the part of the said points, and that thus the said bills may be supported, and any particular bill may be removed by disengaging the ends of the portions 2 and 7 without disturbing the relative arrangement of the remaining bills. Furthermore, a string or twine 13 (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1) may be inserted through either the eye 9 or the eye 4, and the bills or papers may be passed from over the portion 2 or portion 7 upon the said string in the same order in which they were filed. Thus the file may be cleared of bills and papers when desired.
It will be observed that the ends of the portion 7 and the portion 2 are alike in construction, but that the parts thereof are oppositely disposed and that they engage and interlock with each other in a similar manner.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters of oppositely disposed, said ends being point= Patent, is ed, each end having an eye located adjacent 1. A bill-file consisting of a wire having said point and grooves leading toward said ends of like construction with the parts thereeyes.
5 of oppositely disposed, said ends being point- In testimony whereof I afliX my signature I 5- ed, eyes located adjacent each said point, the in presence of two witnesses. eye of one end adapted to receive the point of PLEASANT T LEMASTER. the other end and vice versa. Witnesses:
2. A bill-file consisting of a wire having M. O. GENTRY;
IO ends of like construction with the parts there- L. P. EPToN.
