PRESSER-FOOT.

To all whom it' may concern: p

Be it known that I, GINA C. .CRoMPToN, citizen of the United States, residing at Park City, in the county of Summit and State of Utah, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in Presser-Feet,

of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in sewing machine presser feet; and it has for its general object to provide a foot which while no more expensive than the ordinary foot extant, is adapted by virtue of its construction to carry lace or the like, piping and finishing braid in such manner that the necessity of taking the ruttier apart is obviated and it is expedient to utilize the machine table for the goods instead of putting the ruiling of the goods under the machine arm as is necessary when the ordinary foot is employed.

The invention will be fully. understood from the following description and claim when the same are considered in connection with the drawings, hereby made a part hereof, in which:

Fig. 3 is a frontelevation of the same. Fig. t is an enlarged section taken longitudinally through the foot in the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.

My novel sewing machine foot A is made of the usual material and is curved or dished in the direction of its length and in the direction in which the materials are fed inthe conventional manner.

The foot may be connected with the appropriate part of a sewing machine in any manner consonant with the purpose of my invention without involving departure from the scope of the invention as claimed, though I prefer to provide for the purpose, the upright arm B which extends upwardly from the rearward end of the foot and is recessed at a and and the apertured arm C which reaches forwardly at a right angle from the lower portion of the right-hand edge of the upright arm B. I also prefer to provide the Speccation of Letters Patent.

foot A with the usual guide arm D which reaches rearwardly from the lower portion of the left-hand edge of the upright arm B, a'. c., in the direction in which the materials are fed, and rests at a right angle to said arm and in a vertical plane at one side of that of the foot A.

In addition to the usual needle opening e, the foot A is provided with slots M, N and P, all of which extend in the direction of the width of the foot, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The slot M is arranged nearest the forward end of the foot A and has its mouth disposed at the left hand edge of the foot, from which edge it extends at a right angle and about the proportional distance i1lustrated. The slots N and P are arranged one in front of the otherand in rear of the slot M, and extend from the right-hand edge of the foot, where their mouths are located, at a right angle to said edge. The slot N is of about the same length as the slot M, but the slot P is preferably shorter than the slots M and N in about the proportion shown.

In the practical use of my novel sewing machine foot, the slot M-z e., the one at the left hand side of the foot, takes lace or the like, while the right hand slots N and P take, braid and piping respectively; and it will be manifest to those skilled in the art that by virtue of the foot possessing. the said capacity of function, the three pieces of material are carrie-d in proper relative arrangement and in such a way that it is unnecessary to take the ruiiler, not shown, apart, and the machine table may be utilized for the goods instead of placing the ruiiiing of the goods under the arm of the machine.

Notwithstanding the practical advantages hereinbefore ascribed to the foot A because of its novel slot M, it will be noted that the foot may be produced quite as cheap as the ordinary, well known slotted foot.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

A presser foot for use on sewing machines, dished or curved in the direction of its length and having, adjacent its forward end, a

transverse slot which extends inwardly from its left-hand edge and is adapted to receive lace or analogous material, a transverse slot for braid extending inwardly from its righthand edge, at a point in rear of the rstnamed slot, and having its inner end portion lapped with the inner end portion of said first-named slot, and a comparatively short slot for piping extending inwardly from its right-hand edge, at a point in rear of the second-named slot.
