Description
PATENTED APR 10, 1906.
G, YOUNG. DOOR HOLDING CATCH.
APPLIOATIOB' FILED APR. 14;. 1906.
Inventor Witnesses UNITED STATES PATEN T Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 10, 1906.
Application filed April 14:, 1905. Serial No. 255,582-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsT YOUNG, acitizen of the United. States, residing at I-Iallock, in the county of Kittson and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Door- IIolding Catch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door locks and catches, and has for its principal object to provide an improved holding-catch which.
engages with the door-carried portion of the locking device and serves to maintain the door in open position.
With this and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door provided with a catch and locking means constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the catch.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout both the figures of the drawings.
The door is shown as provided with an escutcheon-plate 12, through which passes a shank 11 of a handle 13. In order to hold the door in the open position, a catch 20 is employed for engagement by the loop-likehandle 13' This catch 20 is formed of a piece of spring-wire or similar material, the central portion of which is bent to form a loop 21, the sides of the loop being brought comparatively close together, as shown in Fig. 1, and then turned backward in parallel relationand rigidly secured to the fixed frame, in this case the wall of the barn.
The catch is so disposed with relation to the loop-like handle that when the door is swung to open position with the loop in the vertical position shown in Fig. 1 said loop may enter between the two side members of the catch, or if the loop-like handle be nearly horizontal it will strike against the inclined portion of the catch, and in riding up the same said handle will be turned to assume a horizontal position and will then be caught and frictionally held by the catch, as seen more clearly in Fig. 2.
Havin thus described the invention, What is claime is 1. In a device of the class specified, a looking member having an operating-handle, and a retaining-catch comprising a loop of yieldable material arranged for frictional engagement with the handle and provided with an inclined portion forming a cam for turning the handle to proper position before engagement with the retaining-surface of the catch.
2. In a device of the class specified, a locking member having a revoluble handle, and a retainingcatch for engaging the handle, said catch having a cam-face for turning the handle to engaging position.
3. In a device of the class specified, a looking member having a revoluble handle, and a retaining-catch formed of a loop of spring metal, the side arms of the loop serving to receive the handle when the latter is in one po sition, said loop having a cam-face to engage with and turn the handle when the latter is presented to said catch at an angle to the side arms of the loop.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GUST YOUNG.
