Description

@mitch tant @anni @fitte JOSEPH W. BAILEY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.'-
Letters Patent No. 81,579, dated September 1, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN MARKING WEATHER-BOARDING.
Y 'IO ALL WHOM IT MAYV GONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. BAILEY, ofthe city ofNew Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of- Louisiana, have invented a certain new, useful, and' improved Mode of Indicating theOverlapping Line of Weather- Boards, by marking the said line in a novel way; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, and' which represent front and end views of two weather-boards, 'as marked by my method.
In order that thegreat value and importance of my invention shall be fully comprehended, it is only necessary to advert to the fact that, in the operation of putting on weather-boarding,'as now universally practised by carpenters and joiners, that part of each board that is to be exposed, or shown to the Weather, as mechanics express it, has always to be measured and marked' by hand. This is sometimes done just before the board is put into Vitsfplace on a wall; but usually, theboard is nai1ed to its place first, and the admeasurement is made afterwards. In either case, the admeasurement and themarking consume far more time than is required to nail or fasteh-theboard upon the wall. Gauges, especiallyvconstruotcd and adapted to the purpose, are the implements commonly employed to indicate the proper ladmeasurement, and thus to secure a uniform width of exposure as to each and every board; Bat inasmuch as no admeasurement, as a general thing, is ever made,4
excepting only at the two ends of the boards, uniformity is only secured throughout the whole length of the sume when'the boards are perfectly straight upon their lower edges. If aboard be sprung edgewise, as is nearly always the case, to a greater or less'extent, the .gauge has `to be applied at its middle, or the result will be great irregularity of width; and if the lap' 13e very-slight or narrow, it not unfrequently happens that the veryintegrity of the Wall is destroyed by openings between the boards.
f My invention saves all the time lost in the above-described way, and secures perfectly-straight lines as to the edges of every board, and hence uniformity of width at every point, from one end of them te the other.
.It-consists simply of a mnrkingot" the boards, along the line-at which the lower edge oflthe next superior board is to be placed, either as they are being sawed out of the log, or afterwards, when they are being planed,
by mc'ans of any proper tool :for making-a groove or other plainlyvisibleinscription, longitudinally, which tool is connectedwith the `saw-,mill or the planingfmachine, as the case may be; or, instcadof a groove or other equivalent impression, when the mark is madein the operation of planing, a raisedline mayvery easily be substituted, by a slight gapor notch in thecutters of the machine; orrit may sometimes he expedient to make the mark consist of the lower edge of a bevel that is cut in the act of planing the board.
I do not deem it .necessary to describe any particular mechanical means or device for making the mark, nor my particular arrangement for the effective adaptation or application of the same to the fulfilment ofthe prescribed object, because I wish it distinctly understood that, whilst I lary no claim to the exclusive use of any lproper 'means for inscribing or producing the niark, perfor' any special mode of applying such means, I reserve the liberty, which is my right, of employing any sufficient means, and to employ them in any eifective manner, by any'u-suul a'xrrangoment'or application. 'My invention docs not refer to the means or instrumentalities for producing a mark, but it is the marking itself that establishes its value.
The mark may consist of a-series of punctures or ldots,as shown at tig. l, extending from one end of the boards `to the other; or of a continuous groove, thus extending; or oi' a number of 'short grooves, with unmarked spaces between them. Any mark will answer that is deep enough not to be'oblit'erated by the planing of the boards, is distinct enough to be plainly visible throughout its entire length, so that thc precise line at which the lower edge of the next upper board is to be placed can be discerned. Both sides ot' every board should be marked, as shown at fig. 2, so that the best face and edge may always constitute, respectively, the outsideface and the lower edge, in their relations to the wall. One mark will usually answer, butit may` sometimes be desirable to inscribe or mark two, or even three, so that there may be a greater or less extent of weather-surface or lap,.vat the pleasure of the builder, accordingly'as varying circumstances may require an extension or diminution oi'- the same.
sims 2 l Having thus described my invention, und pointed out its enormous economic merit inthe saving of time that is nt present absolutely lost in the practice of nii existing and heretofore-known methods of accomplishing tho same end, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i8-
The marking of weather-boards, in the manner herein described, during the operation of manufacturing them in the sew-mill, or afterwards, during the process of dressing them in the planing-machine, as and for the purpose set forth.
J. W. BAILEY.
