To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. Co'r'roM, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Bidder, in the parish of Beauregard and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful. T-Square, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to T- squares, and aims to provide a novel and improved implement of that character adapted for use by carpenters and mechanics, and especially designed for laying off and marking siding and weather boarding, and also capable of acting as a gage for various purposes.

It is also within the scope of the invention to provide a T-square having new and useful details of construction, to render it particularly desirable by carpenters or similar artisans, the device also being comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction, being constructed readily of sheet metal, and being convenient, serviceable, efficient and practical in use.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangementof parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan View of the improved T-square. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the square. Fig. 1 is an enlarged fragmental detail illustrating the pivotal portion between the stock and blade.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a one part stock or head 1, which is formed from a flexible sheet metal strip or bar, and which has the angularly projecting end portions 2 which project in the same direction and which are arranged at 1 right angles with the body of the stock.

tion overlapping the central portion of the stock 1, and pivoted or fulcrumed thereon by means of a pivot and clamping bolt 1 engaged through the stock and blade. The bolt 1 has a counter sunk head 5 engaging the stock 1, and flush with the under surface of the stock, and a thumb or wing nut 6 is threaded upon the bolt 4: and bears upon the pivoted end portion of the blade 3 for clamping the blade upon the stock.

As a means for holding the blade 3 at various angular positions with respect to the stock, the blade '3 is provided adjacent its pivot, with a depressed nib or lug 7, and the stock is provided with an arcuate series of depressed portions or indentations 8 for receiving the nib 7 at predetermined angular positions of the stock and blade relative to one another, and whereby when the nut 6 is tightened, it will cause the nib 7 to engage and remain in the corresponding indentation 8, for holding the parts in place.

For facilitating the accurate adjustment of the blade relative to the stock, the butt or pivoted end of the blade is provided with a pointer 9, which cooperates with a protector scale 10 provided upon the stock 1, and whereby the blade may be readily positioned at the desired angle relative to the stock.

The blade 3 is provided along its longitudinal median'line, with a series of depressed spurs or points 11, which act as scribing or marking elements.

The free end of the blade 3 is provided with a recessed or bent back tongue 12, the tongue 12 being disposed above the free end of the blade, and the free end portion of the blade and tongue 12 are tapered to the end of the blade. The tongue 12 forms a hook which is engageable over and behind the belt worn by the carpenter, in order that the T-square may be readily hung from the belt, or from any other suitable support. The tongue or hook 12 may also be found useful for other purposes in the various uses to which the present device can be put.

The inner edge of the stock 1 is provided at opposite sides of the blade 3, with graduations or marks 13, which are especially useful when the device is used as a gage for window sash pulleys, and which indicate the standard thicknesses of window sashes, or the standard widths of sash-ways.

The present T-square is useful for many purposes, as Will be obvious Without lengthy comment, it being noted, that the angular end portions 2 of the stock 1 enable the stock to rest or bear against the edge side of a board or other object, in order that the blade 3 Will extend properly across the board or object. The blade 3 may be set at right angles to the stock, or may be arranged atan acute or obtuse angle relative thereto, to act as a miter square When desired. The device is especially useful for marking or laying off siding 01' Weather boarding, since the stock 1 may be placed astrid'e the top board or other board, and one end portion 2 of the stock may be brought against one edge of the board, so that the stock 1 will be disposed at right angles to the said edge of the board, Whereby the stock 1 may be employed for marking off the board in the desired manner, and the blade 3 may be set for marking out a line parallel With the said edge of the board, or at the desired angle relative thereto.

The depressed spurs or points 11 are of advantage, since they serve as scribing or marking elements, they being arranged at predetermined distances from the pivot of the blade. By striking the blade 3 With a. hammer or other suitable implement over the proper spur 11 desired, the said spur can be made to enter the Wood or object, to leave an impression or mark therein, this being due to the fact that the blade 3 is flexible whereby the portion of the blade immediately adjacent the selected spur 11 may'yield to allow the said spur to enter the wood, Without the liability of all the be formed at the spurs entering the Wood. The indentation or mark thus made may be used to start a drill bit into the Wood for boring out a mortise, or the indentation may be used as a basis for marking or laying Off the object. The present device is also especially useful as a gage for Window sash pulleys. Thus, the stock 1 may be placed astride the jamb of the Window frame, and the graduations or marks 13 may be employed for properly centering the stock, to bring the pivot bolt 4 midway between the sides of the sashway. The olade3 Which is adjusted at right angles with the stock 1 may then be swung or sprung into the sash-Way, the stock 1 being disposed against the lintel, and then by striking the blade 3 adjacent the proper spur 11, the said spur Will mark in the sash-Way, the point into which, the bit is to be run, for forming one end of the pulley mortise. The other end of the pulley mortise may also be located by the same method, and in this manner the pulley mortise may proper point of the Window frame.

What is claimed is:

A T-s'quare embodying a stock, and a flexible sheet metal blade carried thereby, the blade having depressed spurs and the portions of the blade adjacent the respective spurs being yieldable.
