WEATH ER-BOARD GAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,404, dated August 21, 1883.
Application filed December 16, 1882. (No model.)
4 Clamp and Gage 'for Weather-Boarding; and
we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the inven= tlon, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1. is a perspectiveview of our improved gage and clamp for weather-boarding, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the outside of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Our invention has relation to gages and clamps for holding and marking the places tor nailing weather-boarding; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter weatherboarded. The lower part of the strip A has a slot, Qand theends of the strips DD, on both sides of the slot, are bent into two eyes, F F, for the reception of a pin or pintle, G, the eyes F forming the outside knuckles of a hinge. In the slot (3 slides a dog, H, having two points corresponding to the points of the dog B, and provided with a stem, I, the lower part of which is square where it slides in the slot, while the upper part is screw-threaded and provided with a thumb-nut or plain nut, J by which the dog may be held fast at any place in the slot. I
K is a bar or strip of metal of the same width as A, and having its lower end bent to form a step or shoulder, L, while its upper end is reduced to a strip, M, which is bent around the pin G, forming the center knuckle in'the hinge, connecting the two bars A and K.
When the device is to be used, the dog H is adjusted at that distance from the upper dog, B, at which the boards are to be nailed above each other, and the dogs are driven into the studding of the house, one clamp being used at each end of the board, or more if the boards are very long. The upper edge of the board is then pushed against the lower beveled side of the step L, whereby the part K is lifted out from the wall to allow the board to be supported, with its lower edge resting upon the step. The board is now held and may be nailed onto the studding, when the device is removed and driven in higher up, the lower dog fitting into the holes made by the upper dog. In this manner the boards will be nailed at exactly the same distance above each other, and are held in place for nailing, saving agreat amount of time and labor.
If it is desired to remove the board from the device for the purpose of saving it Oh", Or any other purpose, the upper edge of the board is tilted outward, which will open the clamp and allow the board to drop out.
The lower part may be used as a straightedge, and the edge of the upper part may be divided and marked to serve as a rule.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a combined gage and clamp for weather boarding, the upper slotted part, A, having dog B at its upper end and eyes]? at its lower slotted end, the lower part, K, having shoulder L, beveled at its lower side and upper reduced end, forming eye M, pintle G, and dog H, having stem I, square at its lower part and screw threaded at its upper part, and nut J, all constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
