To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. EMORY, a
' citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Washbench and Step-Ladder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in combination step- 1, ladder and bench.
My invention consists in the novel details of construction, a preferableembodiment of which is described in the specification and illustrated inthe drawings, wherein Fi ure 1 is a perspective view of my combine step-ladder and'bench when used as a step-ladder. Fig. 2 is a side view of my oombination step-ladder and bench when used as i a bench.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents i I side rails, and mortised therein are strips 2,
which serve as steps for step-ladder. bench-legs 4 and 4 are pivoted to the side rails, as at 5, and'abut against the inclined face of. the bracing-plates 6. i This prevents spreadin of thelegs .when set up as illustrated in ig. 2. The bracing-plates comprise bases secured to the sides of the ladder, angular portions 6, and extremities 6 back of which the legs lie in engagement with the angular portions of the plates.
Legs 4 4 are I provided with hooks 7, which when ladder is in use enter eyes 8 on under side of benchseat 9, thereby preventing the same from collapsi-ng.
The
to upper rest 12. The free end of the seat or support 9 has a projection 9, extending The bench-seat or ladder-support 9 is hinged, as at 10, to a rigid strip 11, secured centrally and nearly across the entire width thereof. The bottom of the ladder is also provided with a rigid strip 11, having a recess 12, adapted to receive the projections 9 of the seat when the device is folded or being used as a bench. This arrangement pro-. v1
rom the foregoing it will be evident that I e have provided a simple, stron and durable device for the purpose set forifii, and
What I wish to claim is In a step-ladder, legs pivoted to the side 0 the ladder, the legs at one end also servin as braces, bracing-plates for the legs secure to the sides of the ladder, a rigid strip extending across the ladder at the top and'bottom thereof, the bottom strip having a recess in one edge thereof, a combined seat and support hinged to thejupper strip at one end, a pro 'jection on the opposite end adapted to fit in l the recess of the lower strip, means for securing the legs to, the ladder and means for securing one pair of legs to the support.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 16th a day of May, 1903.
v CHARLES EHEMORY,
