COMBINED STEP-LADDER AND IBONINGeBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 29, 1914:.
Application filed DecemberIS, 1913. Serial No. 806,526.
To all whom it may cone-c2 14.:
Be it known that I, l VILLIAM H. ANsELLp a citizen of the United States, residing at} Cashion, in the county of Maricopa and; State of Arizona, have invented certain new; and useful Improvements in Combined Step-Ladders and Ironing-Boards, of which;
the following is a specification, reference bei with forwardly curved hook members at This invention relates to new and useful n'nprovements in combined step ladders andv ing had to the accompanyingdrawings.
ironing tables and the primary object of the invention is to provide a combined device of i this character which may be quickly and; readily set up for use or taken down, when:
desired.
tween the board and ladder structure proper when the device is set up for use as a ladder. A. still further ob ect of the inventlon resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to 1 manufacture and one which will be very effi- I end of the board is the end which rests upon With these and other objects in view, the
cient and useful in operation.
invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement 3 of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure l is a side elevation of a device set up for use as a step ladder and constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan viewof the same folded. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the ironing table portion thereof and the support therefor removed from the ladder portion of the device proper. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the table removed. Fig. 5 is a section through the locking means for the braces between the support and the ladder proper. Fig. 6 is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of one of the strips designed to form keepers for the bracing means between the ladder and support therefor; and Fig. 8 is a sectional view showing the device applied to use as an ironing table.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in whichpreferred type consisting of the side rails and the cross pieces or steps 3.
. I provide a removable support for the ladder with an improved means for locking the ladder and support together, which forms the essential feature of my invention. In carrying out this idea, the upper ends of the side rails 2 of the ladder, are provided which are adapted to be engaged with openings in a pair of projecting keepers 5 carried on the under face of a board 6, immediately-adjacent the end of the ladder. This board 6 forms the support proper and, in order to brace the support to the ladder, I provide a pair of bracing arms 7 which are loosely pivoted to the rear edges of the side rails 52 at the lower ends thereof. The outer ends of these bracing arms are bent angularly and adapted to be received in openings in an additional pair of keepers 8 carried on;
the under face of the board 6 at the opposite end of the ladder from that on which the keepers 5 areprovided. This last mentioned the floor whenthe device is being set upas a ladder. I have also provided an additional bracing and locking means between. this supporting board 6 and the ladder proper. Tothis end, I provide an additional pair of bracing arms 9 which are loosely pivoted to the under faces of the side rails 2 of the ladder, about mid-way of their ends. Locking means for the free ends of these bracing armsare provided on the under face of the board 6, this means consisting of a pair of spaced keepers 10 and a pair of leaf springs 11.. A leaf spring is secured to the board in connection with each keeper, the spring being secured at the end farthest from the keeper and the end of the spring adjacentthe keeper being bent outwardly and partially received within said keeper. The free ends of the bracing arms 9 are adapted to be brought into engagement with the outer faces of said springs and forced under the keepers. When so disposed, the free outwardly bent ends of the springs will retain said free ends of the bracing arms within said keepers, thus locking the ladder and the support in proper position. The ladder will then be secured in such position as to be used for the many purposes to which ladders are applied.
After the ladder has been properly set up for use and it is desired to knock down ladder and-secured thereto, whereby the device may be placed out of the way. In order to secure the board to the ladder when the device is knocked down, a securing strap 12 is provided.
In order to carry out the object of the invention, the board 6 is designed to form an ironing table and, to this end, the one end of said board is notched or provided with an elongated recess 13. Hinged to the under face of the board, at the termination of this slot or recessil3, is a supporting arm 14, the hinge being secured to the arm at a point adjacent one end of the latter, whereby to dispose the last mentioned end through the slot-or recess 18 when said arm is extended outwardly, with respect to the board. This last mentioned short end of. the arm 14 is adapted to form a clamping arm with respect to the adjacent top face of the board 6, in the application of said board to use. The same is adapted to clamp on a table or other structure which is designed for disposition between this .last referred to end of the arm and the upper face of the board at the last mentioned end thereof and the clamping or engaging face of this arm forming the jaw or the like is somewhat recessed or notched, as shown at 15. The under face of the board is provided with a pair of spaced strips 16 between which said arm 14 is designed fordisposition when the arm is brought against the under face of the board. A pivoted retaining member 17 is carried on the one strip 16 adapted to be disposed over the supporting arm 14 to lock Copies oi this patent may be obtained for the the latter in position against the board. It will be understood that the application of the board to use is entirely independent of the ladder heretofore described.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the manner of applying the same to use will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and. one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
lVhile I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 2- In a device of the class described, a ladder, a support therefor loosely hinged to the upper end thereof, bracing arms loosely hinged to the lower portions of said ladder and adapted for engagement with the lower portions of said support, a keeper carried on the support intermediate of its ends, said keeper being open at its front and bottom, an arm hingedly connected to the ladder intermediate of its ends, said keeper being adapted to receive the free end of said arm, and a spring locking bar secured at its lower end to said support, the upper end of said bar extending within said keeper to support the free end of said arm therein, whereby to secure the ladder and support in operative positions with respect to one another.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. ANGELL.
