Be it known that we, EvnLYN F. "WEBSTER and EARL l Vnnsrnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Portland. in the county or" Multnomah and State of Oregon have invented new and useful lmprovements in Combined Step-Ladders and Ironing- Boards, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a combined step ladder and ironing board; the object of the invention being to provide a combination device of this character which may be readily converted from an ironing board to a step ladder or which may be folded in a compact bundle when not in use.

A further object of the invention is to construct an article of this class which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity cheapness and efliciency.

With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the followingspecification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the ironing board which, in the present instance, comprises two elements one co-extensive with the other. The longer element, indicated by the numeral 2, is hingedly secured to the shorter element. indicated by the numeral 3, the connecting hinges 4 being let into suitable depressions formed in the meeting ends of the sections 2 and 3. so that a smooth joint will be afforded when the sections are retained in longitudinal alinement. The section 3 is provided with a longitudinally extending Specification of Letters Zatent.

slot 5 which communicates with a widened slot or depression 6 provided in the longer member 2, the last mentioned. depression having a cover plate 7 which is arranged flush with the outer face of the bore, and which is provided with an elongated slot 8 that communicates with the slot 5 in the section Having one of its ends pivoted in what may be termed the outer end of said slot 5 and extending within the depression 6 below the plate 7 and in alinement with the slot 8 of the said plate 7 is a longitudinally extending rod member 9, the free end of the being preferably formed with lateral extensions 10, and the rod 9, when the same contacts with the end wall of the slot will assume an angle with relation to the sections 2 and 3 and sustain the section at approximately a right angle to the section f2, this arrangement being clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 8 of the drawings. The opposite or outer end of the elongated section 52 is centrally provided with a substantially rectangular cleat 11, and its underfacc, at a suitable distance from but in alinement with the said depression has arranged thereon a lug or staple 12. This lug adapted to provide a contact memher for an angular portion 13 provided upon the lower arm of a spring clamp 14, the said clamp being of a substantially lJ-shaped formation and. the connecting member for the arms or the clamp being received by the lug 1.2. The upper arm of the clamp 14 is secured to a block 16 on the underface of a removable sleeve board 15.

By removing the clamp from engagement with the lug upon the underface of the ironing board, it will be noted that the sleeve board will be readily separated from the ironing board. and when the device is in its collapsed or folded positiom the sleeve board may be received between the rounds of the ladder section of the device which will presently be described, and as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

The section 1 at its notched end is provided adjacent its longitudinal edges with depending members or blocks CUP-17; and t0 the outer face of each of the said blocks is pivotally connected, as at 18, leg members 19 the said leg members being properly spaced and having their free ends connected by a suitable bar 20.

The section 2 of the board, at its hinged connection with the section 3 and upon its underfa'ce is formed with spaced depending members or blocks 2l21, the said blocks extending beyond'the end of the section 2 and providing supports for the section 3..

In addition to the blocks, a transverse cleat 22 may be arranged between the said blocks upon the underface of the section 2 andproject beyond the said end to provide an additional support for the section 8. This cleat also prevents the warping of the board, and if desired, an additional ole-at 23 may be arranged in the notched end of the said board to strengthen the same and likewise )reVent the war oin n O of one of the sides of the ladder, and the securing nut for the bolt is likewise arranged in a similar countersink in the outer face of the other side of the. ladder. In addition the pivot bolt 28 may be provided with spaced perforations, whereby a plurality of washers 30 may be secured upon the said bolt and brought into engagement with the inner faces of the blocks 21-. The free ends of the sides 27 of the ladder are provided with cut-away portions or notches 31, and these notches are adapted to engage with the connecting bar 20 of the leg sections when the device is set up as a step ladder, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4;.

In order to sustain the ladder member 26 and the leg members 19 at a proper angle with relation to each other to provide supports for sustaining the board in a horizontal position, we provide sides 27 of the ladder 26 with approximately centrally arranged diametrically oppositely disposed outwardly extending lugs 32 which are adapted to be engaged by the hooked ends 33 ofthe plates 34 arranged upon one of the edges of the leg sections 19. The hooks are preferably of spring material so that they will tightly engage with the lugs and prevent the accidental collapsing of the leg or ladder sections. The lugs 32, will, of course, normally contact with the leg sections when the ladder section is swung between the leg sections and when folding the device to a compact bundle and to provide for this, we

.Jhave transversely slotted the inner faces of the legs 19 to suitable diametrically opposite points, indicated by the numerals3 5, so that the lugs 32 will be received within the said slots'when the leg and step sections advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent 'to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what we claim is: e V

1. An article for the purpose set forth including a board comprising two co-extensive sections of unequal lengths, a hinged connection between the sections, a rod pivotally arranged in a groove in the shorter section and extending into a recess'in' the longer section, a covering plate for the mentioned recess having an elongated slot, the end of the rod having lateral extensions adapted to engage with the inner face of the plate when the shorter section is swung upon the longer section of the bolt, and block members secured to the longer section adapted to support the shorter section-when the sections are in alinement.

2. The combination with a board having its ends provided with blocks, end supporting members pivotally connectedrwith the blocks, and the blocks at one of the ends of the board projecting beyond the said end, of an extension hingedly secured to the said end of the board proper and adapted to be supportedupon the blocks when the extension is swung in a line with the b0ard,a rod member pivotally secured to the extension and having its free endformedwith a laterally arranged member, the board having a recess to receive the end of the rod and a slotted plate covering the recess and retaining the end of the rod in the said recess.
