` CHAN-HOLDER.
Patented March 13, 1906.
Appucamnea october 30,1905. serial No. 285.111.
l county of Benton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. A Y
This invention relates to new and usefulimprovements in chalk-holders, forming a within the casing, making it impossible to the chalk is nearlyy remove the same until used up.
The invention consistsin various details of constructionand combinations and arran ments of parts, which will be hereinafter ly described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
Our invention isillustrated in the accom panyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved chalk-holder. Fi 2 isa sectional view longitudinally throug the device; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the parts disassembled, two of the parts being in section.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a casing,
which may be of any shape, referably conforming to the shape of a'bloc of chalk commonly used for coating the tips of billiardcues. Said casing has open ends, one end being providedI with a flange A to retain the rotate with a spindle K, journaled in the op-} posite `walls of the cap or closure N. Said U- 4 shaped member is held to the inner end of drawings.
` said closure` by means of the threaded end of theeyebolt Q, which passes through the top of the closure and fits a threaded aperture in said member C.. Said closure has two indentures J J formed parallel to each other'and adjacent to the marginal edges thereof and affording two inwardly-extending ribs which vare disposed one upon either edge ofsaid member C', thereby holding the latter securely from turning. One endof said spindle is hollow, the wall thereof being angular G may fit said aperture and afford means for rocking the shaft for the purpose of throwing the angled portions of said member C into engagement with the indentures formed in the receptacle which' holds the chalk, as shown clearly in the sectional view of the It will be noted that said member C is so constructed that the angled ends thereof will normally .be out ofv engagement with the indentures formed in the chalkholder, but that when the wings on said reel are' turned in opposite directions', with their ends engagin the indentures inthe arms of the member and when the capor closure is telescoped within the casing, so that the apertures T and T come into registration witheach other, said angled portions C will engage the indentures Bin the chalk-holding receptacle.
` From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provisionof the apparatus shown and described in our invention a simple andv efficient means is afforded for lockin the block of chalk within the casing, which be VSuspended by means of a string within convenient reach of a person desiring to use the chalk, and when it is desired to replenish the chalk the same may be done by the simple use of the'key,which may be inserted .in the hollow spindle yon-which the reel is mounted, causing saidwings to be thrown out of engagement with the resilient arms of said Voutlined in cross-section in order that a key atter may roo member C', thus, causing said arms to withdraw from 'the indentures B, allowing the .closure to 'be removed;
ended receptacle with indentured walls, one l end thereof having an inwardly-turned flange, a closure telescoping within said receptacle, a member having resilient angled arms carried by said closure,and means for IIO throwing the angled ends of said arms into indentures formed in the walls of said receptacles, as set forth.
2. Adevice for holding chalk comprising an open-ended receptacle,` one end of which has inwardly-turned iiang'es,l two of the opposite walls of said receptacle beingl indentured, a closure telescoping within said receptacle, a U-shaped member fixed to said closure and having resilient arms, the ends of which are angled, and means for throwing said angled ends into said indentures whereby the closure may be locked within the casing, as set forth.
3. A device for holding chalk comprising an open-ended receptacle, one end of which has inwardly-turned flanges, two of the opposite walls of said receptacle being indentured, a closure telescoping within said receptacle, a U-shaped member fixed to said closure" and having resilient arms, the endsof which are angled, a rotatable shaft journaled within said closure and having oppositely-disposed wings which are adapted to throw the angled ends of said member into said indentures of the casing, as set forth.
Li.. A device for holding chalk comprising an open-ended receptacle, one end of which has inwardly-turned flanges, two of the opposite walls of said receptacle being indentured, a closure telescoping within said receptacle, a U-shaped member fixed to said closure and having resilient arms, the ends of which are angled7 a shaft journaled in the walls of said closure and having one end hollow adapted to receive a key, oppositely-disposed wings upon said shaft designed to engage indenf tures in the armsof said member wherebyY the angled ends of said member may be thrown into indentures in said receptacle, as set forth.
5. A chalk-holder' comprising an openended receptacle, one end of which has an inwardlyturned flange, indentures formed in the op osite walls of said receptacle, a closure a apted to telescope within the receptacle, a U-shaped locking member having resilient arms which are indentured and provided with angled ends, a screw-eye passing through the end of the closure and engaging said member, a rotatable shaft having oppositely-disposed wings designed to engage the indentures of said arms to hold the angled ends thereof into the indentures in said receptacle, as set forth.
6. A chalk-holder comprising an openended receptacle, one end of which has an inwardly-turned flange, indentures formed in the opposite walls of said receptacle, a closure adapted to telescope within the receptacle, a U-shaped locking member having re silient arms which are indentured and provided with angled ends, a screw-eye passing through the end. of the closure and engaging said member, a rotatable shaft having oppositely-disposed wings designed to engage the indentures of said arms to hold the angled ends thereof into the indentures in said receptacle, and ribs formed in the end of said closure and adapted to hold said member from turning, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aHix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
