WITNESSESI INVENTOR Ww f l l M ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
Application filed September 23, 1905. Serial No. 279,804:
l'o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OsWALD S. PULLIAM, a citi-zen ofthe United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and usevful Improvements in Car-Body Underframe part-elevational view, the section being taken on line I'I II of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a broken sectional view taken on line III III of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a detail central perspective View of body-bolster Fig. 5, a detail perspective view of draft-rigging carrier Fig. 6, a plan view of modified form; Fig. 7, a part-sectional iew and a part-elevational view, the section being taken on line VII VII of Fi 6; Fi 8, a detail sectional view taken on ine VI I VIII of Fig. 6; Fig. 9, an inverted perspective view of the body-bolster of the form of Fig. 6, and
Fig. 10 an inverted perspective view of a part of .the draft-rigging carrier.
Referring tothe drawings, I have shown two center sills 2 in the form of channels; but I do not desire to be limited to the employment of two center sills of the form illustrated, as my invention contemplates the use of one center sill of any suitable form or of" two or more center sills of other shapes than channels. l
The body-bolster 3 and the draft-rigging carrier 4 both differ somewhat i-n the two forms of my invention as illustrated by the drawings. In both forms, however, the ends of the center sills, the draft-rigging carrier, and the body-bolster are securely locked -together and constitute a very desirable construction for a metallic car-body underframe.
In the form of Fig. 1 the body-bolster 3, comprising the top member 5, the bottom member 6, and the vertical web 7, is formed with a centrally-disposed recess 8 and with ledges 9 and 10. Recess 8 is adapted to receive the draft-rigging carrier and the ends of the two center sills. The draft-rigging carrier constitutes a continuation of the center sills and is constructed with an engagin plate 11, adapted to iit into the recess 8 an e supported on the ledges 9 and 10. The bolster is provided with a center bearingplate 12, and projecting inwardly from the side walls of ledges 9 I employ aseries of lugs or projections 13. These lugs 13 may be either cast 'of the metal of which the bolster is formed or by placing ins or rivets in the mold preparatory to casting the bolster proper and then casting the bolster around said projections. In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have particularly shown this latter construction. The center sills 2 are formed with a series of holes adapted to receive the lugs or roj ections 13 ofthe bolster when the ends o the sills are placed with the bolsterv preparatory to securing said sills to the bolster by means of the said lugs. After securing the sills to the bolster the draft-rigging carrier, which constitutes a filler, is placed in position within the recess of the body-bolster and rigidly secured thereto by bolts or rods, (not shown,) which are passed through holes 14 of the engaging plate 11 and through apertured ears 15 of the bolster. If desirable, lugs 16 may be formed on the draft-rigging carrier, as shown by Fig. 5, against which the ends of the sills abut when placed in position.
In the form of Fig. 6 instead of placing the draft-rigging carrier down into the body-bolster, as 1n the Jform of Fig. 1, it is inserted upwardly into .the recess 8. In this modified form the center bearing-plate 12 is formed on the draft-rigging carrier. Y
If desirable, the engaging lugs formed on the body-bolster may be of such a length as to extend through the metal sill or sills and engage the metal ller.
What I claim is- 1. A car-body underframe construction comprising a metal center sill, a metal bodybolster formed with a recess to receive the center sill, and a metal draft-ri ging carrier interlocked, substantially as set orth'.
2. A carbody underframe construction comprising a metal center sill, a metal bodybolster formed with a recess and with lugs arranged to engage the center sill, and ametal draftrigging carrier, substantially as set forth.
3. A car-body underframe construction comprising a metal body-bolster formed with a recess, a metal center sill extending into the XCO IIO
recess, and a metal draft-rig ing carrier lo cated in the recess, substantia ly as set forth.
4. A car body underframe construction comprising a metal'body-bolsterhaving a central recess and provided with lugs projecting into the recess, a metal sill in the recess, a ller in the recess, said lugs extendin throu h the sill and adapted to engage the ii ler, su stantially as set forth.
5. A car body underframe construction comprising a metal body-bolster formed with arecess and provided with lugs projecting into the recess, center sills in the form of -channels extending into the recess, aller in the recess located between the sills, said lugs engaging the sills, substantially as set forth.
6. A car body underframe construction comprising a metal body-bolster formed With a recess, center sills in the form of channels extending into the recess, and a metal draftrigging carrier located in the recess between the center sills, substantially as set forth.
7. A carbody underframe construction comprising a metal body-bolster formed with a recess, center sills extending into the recess, a metal draft-rigging carrier extending into the recess between the center sills, said bolster, sills and carrier interlocked, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses. i
