JOHN GREEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO COMMONWEALTH STEEL COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION.
' CAR-BODY BOLSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,236, dated November 29, 1904.
Application filed June 3,1904. Serial No- 210,939. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, JOHN GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar- Body Bolsters, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a body-bolster for railway-cars, the object of the improvement being to provide a construction of bolster through which any size of draft-sills may be introduced to be finally positioned and secured in 'place in the bolster without necessity of furnishing any holding means for the sills other than those carriedv by the sill when it is passed through the bolster.
Figure I is a top or plan view of my bolster. Fig. II is a side elevation of the bolster. Fig. III is a longitudinal horizontal section taken on line III III, Fig. II. Fig. IV is a vertical cross-section taken on line IV IV, Fig. I. Fig. V is a vertical cross-section taken on line V V, Fig. I. Fig. VI is a side view of a modification.
The main body of my bolster consists of a' vertical web 1, surmounted by a top chord. 2 and having beneath it a bottom chord 3. The bottom chord carries a center bearing 4 and side bearings 5. The web 1 is reinforced at the location of the side bearings by enlargements 6. In the web above the center bearing of the bolster and beneath the top chord 2 is an opening 7, and at the central portion of this opening is apocket 8 of greater depth than the sides of the opening, which terminate at their bottoms'in draft-sill ledges 9. The draft-sills that are seated in the bolster and which bear lugs or ribs spaced apart to hold them in place in the bolster are first passed through the central portion of the opening 7 so that they will move through the pocket 8, and when they are brought to the proper position in which they are to be located in the bolster they are lifted and moved laterally onto the ledges 9 at each side of said pocket to remain on said ledges, when they are secured to the car-body in the usual manner.
In Fig. VI, I have shown a modification of my improvement, which consists'in locating the draft-sill ledges 9 immediately above the center bearing 4 of the bolster and providing pockets or depressions 8 beyond said ledges toward the end of the bolster to receive the draft-sills, which on being introduced thereinto are raised and placed on the ledges. The sills are therefore moved toward the longitudinal center of the bolster instead of being moved outwardly from its center, in the construction previously described.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a carbody bolster provided with a central opening and having draft-sill ledges within said opening; said opening including a depression beneath the plane of said ledges, substantially as set forth.
2. A car-body bolster having therein a central draft-sill opening, ledges at the lower Sides of said opening; said opening including a depression between said ledges extending downwardly to a plane lower than the level of the ledges, substantially as set forth.
JOHN GREEN.
