certain new -and useful Improvements in Car-Underframes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptiomnsuch as will enable `otl'iers skilled in the artto which it ap'pertains toinake and to use the sa me, reference being had tot-he accompanying-drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of theinrention, though .it is to be un# derstood that the inyention 1s not limited to the exact details of construction shown Aand described; as it is obvious thatfrarious modifications thereof will occur to persons skilled 1n the art.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a. plan view partly in horizontal section of theA end portion of` an underframe, showing al bolster connected therewith, as hereinafter described. Fig. 2 is a central, longitudinal, sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 1. the section being taken on lineQ-Z of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan viewsomewhat simi-l lar to F ig. 1, with the exceptionthat in Fig. 1 all ofihe draft sills hereinafter referred yto are shown and only a part ofthe bolster, whereas in Fig. 3 the draft sills are cut off and one-half of a bolster is shown with a fragment of a side sill connected thereto, Fig. 4 is a transverse, `sectional view, the sectien being taken on line 'lt-t of Fig. 3.
The invention herein specifically shown and described an amplification of the inventive idea disclosed in my application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 552,507, filed March 31, 1910. for car `underframe, and includes the .method of connecting with the sills of an underframe a bolster, as indicated in said application, details of construction differing, among other things, as follows:
In the earlier application a single cast center sill is disclosed, which single sill is bifui-cated within the bolsters; that is, commencing at a portion of the sill before the. sill reaches the holsters, and connected with the bifurcated portion in the earlier appli vcation is a pair of channel-shaped draft sills, the bifurcated extensions of the center sill and the draft sill both lapping and being connected directly to a bolster.
The present invention is specific to spaced center sils A-Ag that is, to center sill members comprising spaced sections, which may ferred, which sections are separately formed and preferably extend from between the draft sills vat each.- 'end of '.-the car continu ously: across the` intervening space, -to,'the ends of which sections are attached draft sills, 'the draft sills lapping the end portions of the center sills, which latter have their vWebs longitudinally slotted,in such manner ,as to`close'the slots in .the center sills after be either rolled or built up., as may be pre?.I
a bolster has been inserted, `as hereinafter described and as indicated in said earlier application. 1
In the specificembodiment of the invenf `tion disclosed in the draw-ings'the center sillscomprise spaced' built up channelshaped sections comprising a-plate or web Vportion 1, which is slotted longitudinally to its end, as indicated 'at 2 inv Fig.'2 ofthe drawing, and 'connected with the Web l are reinforcing angles 3--3, preferably rolled angles. The center sills A-A may be A'of uniform depth, or deeper at the middle, asA may be desired, and it isv evident that Where the center sills are of uniformi `depth they may be formed from commercially-rolled sections or from pressed sections, which may be either channel-shape,`Z-shape, or of any other' suit-able form in cross section..
The draft sillsl 4 are shown as formed of Z-shape in cross section, and may be either rolled or pressed or built. up, as may be desired, though for convenience of manufacture and to secure the desired vwidth of flanges, a pressed section is preferred, said section having a' top flange 5, bottom .Harige G and vertical web portion 7, to the latter of which there is shown att-ached a conventional form of draft lug 8 in Figs. 1 and Q, said lug being broken off in Fig. 3. The bolster used in this combination is preferably acastfmember, indicated generally by the numeral 10, and comprises acontinuous` top portion which includes the flange `11, bestI shown in Fig. 4, which tiange is continuous from end to end of the bolster. Between. the center sills this't-op member is reinforced, as shown in section in Fig. 2, by longitudinally extending ribs or vertical anges, and between the-center sills there is connected with the middle portion of said top member 11 a depending apronlike extension 12, the object of which will be hereinafter cxplained.- .l
Connected with the continuous top' Harige vbefore referred to are side bearing extensions.l5l and combined jacking cast-ing and ropingstaple A16, to the latter of which and Vto the 'end ,face and top' end portion. ofA the outergend o f-tlie bolster diaphragms, there is shown connected Z-sliaped Vside sill 17,
which conforms to the contour of the outer i 'end of the bolster, though it isevident that' any form of sideV sill;- either rolled, upl
. .orplate girder.. may be u sed.`
Between the spaced "center sills and a .compression member 2.0 ot'A the bolster, which provided with flanges 21. Extending longitudinally of the sills and through said flanges 21 rivets 2.21am projected for connecting the member 2Q .tothe spaced cen# tier sills below `thebifurcation 2 therein` thereby forming a spacing member and a compression member 'between said sills which, in the preferred embodiment of the vso -i'ng flanges 26, .which are end; portions vvith l .tensions 27 whicliare seated in intresses- 28,
invention, serves as the-only means for'con neeting th'e'holster to said center sills.
.'T-he -illei portion 20'is `lappednhy Vthev apron 12, before referred to,- and. rivets 24:
are'projected horizontally through the vertical apron 12 and an upwardlyfextending' llange 25 ofthe bolster`v filler 20. The filler 2O is also provided. with outwardly.' extendprovided at their upwar. ly disposed exforined inthe lovversnged portion '|29l of thebolster diaphragme 13,- and connecting the langes. with the i'ni'xerxno-stA extensionv of the. ewiges ze farekverucsi belegd-.basi
i "As-the bolsterf-is I 'are continuous from. points intermediate' the 1 `biilsiters,.and the end-.sillstlie Aslots -2` the center sills periforr'nan important .function .in assein'blugthe parte ofthe underrame, Aduring which, the yfiingiillro the bolsteris 1 slipped into the ends 'of 'the' slots 2- ofthe f :center sills andeartied, as shown in-Fig.2, 'to the inner' portion, pof,`` saidV slots,' afterl v'vhichthe bottomjillerftneiuber 20 ofthe `bolster `isfsli into; position' froinjhe low and carried orwardlyfas shown'in section in Fig. 2,'so that4 its yertieal flange'f25 will Y lap the depending apron l2,V projecting.

The anges 25 and 12 beingriveted together and-the flanges `21 being connected to" the" webs l ofthe cente'rslls, hold the bolster firmly in position.A After then bolster has been slipped to its operative position, as 'es just described, the draft sills are applied and riveted in the positions shown-inthe drawings; that is, 'with their web portions T lapping the outermost slotted portion of the Webs l of the center-sills, in which osition the draft sills are securedbysnitavle connecting means, as rivets Thus far the invention has lieendescribed with the partsfbeing vasseinl: led in'such'relation that the bolster is projeotedi'into; slots foi-ined inthe center sills, butlitjisA evident that it the draft sills are extended rear- Wardly ofthe bolster', as in said earlier ap i plication, and the center sills are,lc'iiinected ,to extensions-o the'draft-siIls', gvhichvprd ject bet-)veen the holsters, it will not-be neces,- sary" tol slot said center sills, though additional reinforcement ivouldprobably he re-v quired if `the parts "arearranged with slotted draft sills'and lunslotted*center sills. l
