Be it known that I, ANTON. Bscxnn, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Underframes for Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled the art to which it appertains to. make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements for underframes for came-one object of the invention being to provide means whereby an underframe can be adapted to trucks of more than the usual height so that the coupcoupling devices on cars having trucks of standard height.
A further object is to insure the proper alining of the outer ends of the bolsters and cross-bearers of an underframe and insure the rigidity of the latter.

In order to adapt the'underfiame to trucks of more than usual height, the members of the center girder are recessed, as shown at 16, and between the center girder I members, above the recessed portion 16, a casting 17 is secured and made with a socket 18 for the reception cf the upper end of the pin which connects the underframe with thetruclr. Angle-bars 19'are secured to the outer faces of the center girder members immediately over the re cessed portions of the latter. Diaphragms 20 are secured at their upper edges to the bolster members and at their inner ends are provided with' flanges 21 securely riveted to the angle-bars 19. The intermediate portion 02 a compression plate 22 (preferably heavier or thicker than the compression plate 12 secured to the crossbearerdiaphragml, has its intermediate portio'npassing through the recesses 16 of the center girder members and bearing against theoutwardly projecting members of. the angle-bars 19. This compression plate 22 extends in both directions from the center girder to points in proximity to the outer ends of the diaphragms 20 and ar' bolted to the flanges .23, projecting laterally, from the inclined edges of said diaphragms. A bottom plate 24, adapted for cooperation'with a truck, is 16- cated within the recessed portion 16 of thecntr girder and'provided with flanges 25. Bolts 26 pass through these flanges, the compression plate 22 and the angle-bars 19 for securing the bottom plate 24 in place, By'nieans of the construction above described I amenabled to mount the underh-ame upon trucks of more than standard height and. to compensate for the difference in; height between suchh'ucksand those commonly employed, to insure proper alinement of the coupling devices between cars. Angle-iron members 27 located at respective sides of 9b the .underframe, extend from one end tosthe other of the car underframe and are secured to the outer ends of the cross-bearer members and the bolstermembers by means of angle-brackets or gussets 28. Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
-1. A car underfrqme comprising a centergirder, crossbearers and bolsters secured to the center girder, angle bars secured to the ends of the cross-bezirers and bolsters and extonding'from end to end of the nnderframe, and
'angle-bars at the ends of snid under-frame and extending means securing said angle bars to the center girder.
-- In ucar underfrnnie, the combination of a center girder, bolster members secured thereto, said center girder having a recessed portion below the bols'ter, diaphragms secured-to the bolster members, and a compression plate extending through the recessed portion of the center girder and secured to said diaphragms.
4. in a car undertrame, the combination of a center girder. bolster members secured thereto, said center girder recessed below the bolster, reinforcingangle-bars secured to the center girder over the recessed portion thereof, diaphragrns secured to the bolster-members and to said reinforcing anglebnrs, and a compression plate disposed under said anglebnrs, passing through the recessed portion of the center girder and secured to the bolster diaphragms.
5; In a car underfrnme, the combination of a center girder, bolster'mcinbers secured thereto, said center girder recessed below the bolster, angle-bars secured to the center girder over the recessed portion thereof, a compression plate passing through the recessed portion of the center girder, bolster diaphragms secured to the bolster members and to said compression plate, and a bottom plate for cooperation withn truck, secured to said compression plate. in testimony whereof, I have-signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
