BURNS D. LOCKWOOD, 0F BELLEVUE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PRESSED STEEL CAB COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CAB-TRUCK.
Application filed December 24, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURNS D. L oKwooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 366 Lincoln avenue, B'ellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the present invention is to provide improvements in what is known to railway engineers as the Fox type of truck for railway rolling stock, or in trucks of similar type, and particularly to increase the strength of the truck without increasing its size or materially changing its proportions.
Railway cars have increased in capacity from, say 60,000 lbs. in 1900 to 120,000 lbs. or more, in 1915, but little attention has been given to the strengthening of the Fox. type of truck, the same having been used practically without change in construction notwithstanding such increase in car capacity, one of the reasons therefor being that the side frames of these trucks are formed by pressing sheet metal to shape in expensive dies and an increase in the size or proportions of such trucks would render such dies useless.
An example of the Fox type of freight car truck is illustrated in United States Patent No. 468,146, granted to D. L. Barnes,
February 2nd, 1892. An example of the Fox type of truck especially adapted for locomotive tenders is found in United States Patent No. 505,159, granted to S. Fox, September 19th, 1893, both of these patentsillustrating trucks in which the side frames are formed of pressed steel.
Trucks of the Fox type are constructed with rigid side frames which at their central portions support the transoms, the side frames transmitting the load from the transoms to the car axles through the medium of U shaped pedestals formed at the ends of the rigid side frames, which pedestals rccch e and are supported by springs mounted on the axle journal boxes, the legs of said pedestals also forn'iing hearings in which the journal boxes slide vertically. Sometimes the side fran'ics of Fox trucks are built up of plates and commercial sections, an exam ple of such built-up side frame being found in United States Patent No. 553,431,granted to C. T. Schoen, January 21st, 1896.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 191. 7. Serial N 0. 68,525.
A specific object of thepresent invention is to so strengthen the side frame of the Fox type of truck as to adapt it for use in railway rolling stock of increased capacity without materially increasing the proportions of the truck.
This invention is illustratedand described a in its adaptation for use as a freight car truck, but without special description it will be readily appreciated that the improvements are equally applicable to all trucks of the Fox or similar type when adapted for use in connection with locomotive tenders. Only so much of the Fox truck will be described as is necessary to illus: trate this particular invention, references being had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters refer to like parts,
Referring now in detail to the drawings,
1 indicates the side frame of what is known as the Fox type of truck, this side frame being similarin contour to the side frames illustrated A. the patents hereinbefore referred to. The plate forming the side frame 1 is provided with an inwardly extending flange 2 extending along the top and end edge portions of the frame. To the inner side of the end portions of plate 1 auxiliary or reinforcing plates 3 are provided each having an inwardly extending flange 4 adapted to contact with and be secured to the inwardly extending flange 2 of the side frame 1. These auxiliary or reinforcing plates may extend if desired throughout the whole length of the side plate 1, but for the sake of illustration are shown in the drawings as only extending'from the ends of the side frames to points near the cross frame members or'transoms of the truck. The inwardly extending flangev of the side frame 1 and also the inwardly extending flanges of the reinforcing plates 2 extend continuously from a point above the pedestal to the lower end portion of the pedestal leg,
frame plates 1 and 2 and extend in the opposite direction as far as it may be considered desirable. These are secured together through themedium of the flanges 2 and in such a manner that there will be a space 5 intervening between them, as shown in the drawings, either or both of the plates being bent, as shown at 6 in Figs. 1 and 2, in such a manner as to bring them in contact with each other and be secured together by suitable means. The truck frame is provided with pedestal members 7 secured to the frame members in the manner shown in the drawings and provided with pedestal braces or ties S. The pedestal members 7 are provided with a portion 9 projecting therefrom in such a manner as to fill up the width of the space 5 intervening between the members 1 and 3, between which it is secured by rivets or other suitable means.
10 indicates the transoms or cross tie members of the truck frame, which serve to tie together theframe members 1 forming the opposite sides of the truck, these transom members being braced and stiffened by the usual cross brace members 11 and the. center brace member 12. 13 indicates a gusset member adapted to assist in securing together construction being flanged in a vertical and bracing the transom members 10, the side frame members 1 and the reinforcing members 3, these members being secured between the flanges 2 and 4 of the side frame and reinforcing members as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
In the modified form of construction, as illustrated in Figs. 5 to r. inclusive, the flanges 15 on the upper and end portions of the side frame members and the flanges 16 on the reinforcing members are made to eX- tend in a vertical and outward direction, and are secured together by rivets or other suitable means, the gusset member 17 in this direction in a suitable manner to contact with and be secured to the upwardly extending flanges of the side frame members and reinforcing members.
Further description of the essential parts of the FOX type of truck will be. found in either of the aforementioned patents, and hence features which are not pertinent to the present invention are not described herein.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
