RAILWAY PASSENGER-CAR DRAFT-RIGGING,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 28, 1906. 7
Application fild March 29,1906. Sarial'No. 308,653l
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN F. OCoNNoR, a
citizen of the United States, residing in Chi-- cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi- 1101s, have invented a new and useful Imrovement in Railway Passenger-Car Draftigging, of which the following is a specification.
My invention re" ates to improvements in draft-rigging for rai way passenger-cars, and more particularly to improvements in construction of the side plates or stop-castings of railway draft-rigging for passenger-cars. As is well known, the si e plates or stop-castings of railway draft-rigging are sub'ected in practical use to enormous blows, shocks, or strains, and heretofore great difficulty has been experienced from the draft-rigging breaking or giving away at the side plates or stop-castings 'or at the shoulders thereon against which the followers abut. Heretofore draft-rigging side lates or stop-castings have always been ma e of plates or Webs of unequal thickness at diflerent points, and especially at the intersection of the stopshoulders with the main plate or web of the stop-casting, and I have observed that the breakage is most apt to occur apparently at these intersections or points where the metal is thicker.
The object of my invention is to provide a passenger-car railway draft-rigging side plate or stop-casting of a simple, strong, eflicient, safe, and reliable construction and capable of successfully withstanding the enormous shocks or blows to which the draft-rigging is subjected in actual and practical use.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or resultthat is to say, it consists of a railway passenger-car draft-rigging side plate or stopcasting, made, as usua of malleable iron or other annealed metal and provided with the customary stops or shoulders for the followers to abut a ainst, and which is composed throughout 0 a web of uniform thickness, both at the stops or shoulders, as well as elsewhere, so that the stop-casting as a whole will be entirely free from T or other sections, which would result in 'ving the casting a greater thickness or bo y of metal at some points than others, with the conse uent imperfections, casting strains, an defects which have heretofore been incident to the main plate or we tion, of a making of side plates or stop-castings of the old construction wherein the stops or shoulders .form right an le or T sections with the of the casting, and in which the main web of the side plate or stopcasting is rovided with a horizontal or longitudinal bend or convolution at its upper edge adapted to fit against the upright web of the passenger-car center sill and project between the upper and lower flanges of the center sill, and in which the upright bends or convolutions of the main web of the stopcasting terminate at this upper longitudinal bend or convolution.
In practicing myinvention the stop-shoulders are formed on the side plate or stopcasting by integral convolutions in the main Web of the side plate or stop-casting, the con volutions or bends forming the stop-shoulders being upright and the web of the casting being of substantially uniform thickness at these stop convolutions or bends as Well as elsewhere, and in practicing my invention the horizontal or lon itudinally-extending strengthening ribs or anges likewise consist of integral bends or convolutions in the main web of the casting without producing any T- sections or thickened parts therein to produce defects and strains or other Weaknesses in the casting operation.
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
By my invention I am enabled to produce not only a much safer and stronger stopcasting and draft-rigging than those heretofore in use, I facture the stop-castings very much cheaper, as by my invention scarcely any defective castings are produced, whereas in making the stop-castings heretofore in use there has always been a heavy percentage o'r' castings but I am also. enabled to manu' that on test have to be rejected and broken up as unfit for use. y
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, dpartly in longitudinal vertical secaft-rigging embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on' line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail top or plan view castings.
sections on Figs. 4 and 5 are detail vertical lines 4 4 and 5 5, respectively of of one of-the side plates or stopwhole will 7 out, while at the same time havin the neces- Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a detail longitudinal section on line 6 6 of Fig. 2 of one of the stopcastings.
In the drawings, A represents the center sills, A the cross-sill, A the carry-iron, B the draw-bar, C C the springs, and D the followers, of a railway passenger-car draft-rigi ging, these parts being of any ordinary or suitable construction.
F F are the side lates or stop-castings, each being corn osed of a cast-metal web F of uniform thic lmess throughout, and each having on their inner side a .ilurality of steps or shoulders f for the followers to abut against, and also a plurality of intermediate sto s or s'houldersf to limit the com ression of t e springs, all these stops or shou ders being formed by integral upright convolutions or bends F in the main web F of the side plate or sto -casting, so that the casting as a ave no T-sections or increased thickness at the points where the stops or. shoulders join or intersect the main web of the casting. The side plate or stop-casting F is further provided with an upper integral longitudinal or horizontal bend or convolution F on its outer side, which fits against the upright web a of the center sill A and between the lower flan e a and up er flange a of the center sill, t is upper ongitudinal bond or convolution F forming longitudinal strengthening ribs or flanges Each of theside plates or st0p-castings F is also furnished near its lower edge with a longitudinal bend or convolution F forming strengthening ribsor flanges f The upright or stop-forrning bends or convolutions terminate short of and do not extend across the upper horizontal web or convolution F My improved passenger-car side plate or stop-casting is thus composed of a cast web of substantially uniform thickness throughsary upright stop-shoulders, and also furnished with an integral upper longitudinal bend or convolution to iit a ainst the upright web of the metal center sill.
I claim 1. In a draft-rigging for railway passengercars, the combination with the draw bar, springs and followers, of side plates or stop-- castings, each consisting of a cast web of substantially uniform thiokn ess thro ugho at, her-- ing an integral upper longitudinal convelu tion therein adapted to fit against and be seem Y to the upright web of the center sill, and iurnished also with a plurality of upright convo lutions forming stops or shoulders for the followers to abut against, substantially specilied.
2. In a draft-rigging for railway passengen cars, the combination with. the draw bar, springs and followers, of side plates or sto lution therein adapted to lit against and bese- 1 cured to the upright web of the center sill, and furnished also with a plurality of upright convolutions forming stops or shoulders for the followers to abut against, said cast web having also a longitudinal convolution at its lower part, substantially as specified.
3. In a draftqigging for railway passen ercars, the combination. with the drawar, springs and followers, of side plates or sto castings, each consisting of a cast web of substan tially uniform thickness throughout, having an integral tion therein adapted to lit against and be socured to the upright web of the center sill, and furnished also with a durality of upright convolutions Forming stops or shoulders for the followers to abut against, said. upright convolutions terminating below said upper longitudinal convolution, substantially as specified.
4. The railwaypassenger-car draf t-rigging consisting of a side plate or stop-casting, cast web of substantially uniform thickness having upright convolutions therein forming stops or shoulders for the followers to abut against, and an upper longitudinal convolution to lit against the car-sill, substantially as specifier 5. The railway passengcr car draft-rigging side plate or stop-casting, consisting of a cast Web of substantially uniform thickness havin g upright convelu tions therein forming stops or shoulders for the followers to abut against, and an upper longitudinal convolution to fit against the car-sill, said upright convolutions being below said upper longitudinal convolution, substantially as specified.
6. The railway passenger-car draft-rigging side plate or web of substantially uniform thickness having upright convoiutions therein forming steps or shoulders for the followers to abut against, and an upper longitudinal convolution to lit against the earsill, said web having also at its lower portion a longitudinal convolution, substantially as specified.
7. The railway passenger-car draft-rigging side plate or stop -casting, consisting of a cast web of substantially uniform thickness, having upper and. lower longitudinal or horizontal convolutions, and provided with upright convolutions exiondi below the upper longitudinal convolution and forming stops or shoulders for the i'ollowers to abut against, sub stantially as specified.
