JOHN- F; oconnon, or onroeeo, ILLINOIS, assrenon, Br mnsnn ASSIGNMENTS, TO-
WILLIAM H. MINER, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that 1, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, siding in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, .of which the foilowingis a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars, and more particularly to the construction of the side plates orstop castings which are secured to are ordinarily made of malleable iron, and
an improved construction of on account of the great length and considerable size of the castings and their somewhat irregular shape, due to the necessity of furnishing them with inwardly projecting shoulders forthe followers to abut against onone face, great difficulty is an perienced in practically producing them free from casting strains or other weaknesses,
,which cause them to. inadequately withstand the enormous strains, ,shocks and blows to which they-are subjected in practical operation from the draw-bar of the car coupler. The object of'my invention is to provide draft rigging side late or stop casting, by means of which the iflicultiesor weaknesses heretofore experienced may be practically overcome.
My invention consists in the novel construction of draft rigging side plate or stop casting herein shown and described and more particularly. specified in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view partly in horizontal section of a draft rigging having a side plate or stop casting embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation o aside plateor stop casting of my invention, showlng the inside face of the same. Fig. 3 isan elevation, showing the rear face of the same-which fits against the side sill or draft timber or member ofthe car frame. Figs. 4 to 8 are cross sections on lines 44, 5P5, 6-6, 7-7 and 88 respectively of Fig.3 and Fig. 9 is a longitudinal section on line 99 of Fig. 2.
In said drawing, A represents the center sills, draft timbers or frame members ofa car to which the side plates or stop castings Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed may 2!), 1908.

with transverse bends'or convolu-' lntermediate bend 6 at its'middle to form the two middle steps or shoulders 7, 7 for the two intermedlate followers to abut against, and provided also with inwardly projecting rectangular'bosses 8, 8 to form the supplemental stops or shoulders 9, 9 which limit the movement of the followers and the compression of the springs, said rectangular bosses 8', 8, having also longitudinally extending shoulders This construction leaves the side-plates or stop castings D with flat smooth wearin faces 11, 11 for the endsof the followers to engage, surrounding the raised bosses 8, 8, and between the front and rear stops 4, 4 and the middle or intermediate stops 7, 7 Andto distribute the metal of the side plate or sto casting D so as to give the casting as a who e great strength against bucklin and at the same time enable the casting to be practically produced free from casting strains or other weaknesses, I provide it on its "back face with a series of longitudi- ,.nally extending end recesses 12, 12, having rounded ends 13 and intervening and mar ginal longitudinally extending ribs 14, 14, and a series of longitudinally extending intermediate recesses 15, 15 having rounded v marginal ribs 17. The two upper longitudinally extend- 'ing end recesses 12 have transversely elongated deepened portions 18, the deepened portions 18 being separated by the narrowed portion 19 of one of the ribs 14. The lower recess 12 at each end has no deepened enlargement 18 communicating therewith. The two upper longitudinally extending recesses or depressions 15 have deepened pornarrowed portion 21 ofy-the rib 17. The transversely extending cavities or recesses 22 in the back face of they side plate or stop casting D formed by the inwardly projecting bosses 8 on the front faceof the casting are bridged by centralwebs 23,. furnished'w th bolt holes 24 to receive the bolts d by which the side plate or stop castings D are secured to the center sills, draft timbers or other frame members of the car.
As the recesses or the back of the side )late or stop casting D extend longitudinal y and have rounded ends 13, although the recesses 12, 12, 12,15,
15,, 15 are contiguous to each other. they tensile or in the direction of'its length;
I claim o p In a draft rigging, a side plate stop casting having 4 on its inner face front, rear, intermediate and supplemental stops for the depressions 12, 15 in followers to abut against, and consisting of a main web 1, furnished with transverse bends or convolutions 4, 4, 6, to form said stops, and inwardly projecting rectangular bosses 8, -8 to form the supplemental stops, and having, a smooth flat bearing face 11 between the stop shoulders for the ends of the followers towear against, said stop:
casting having on its back orrear face a series of longitudinally extending end recesses-or' depressions with ribs between the same and a series of longitudinallyextending intermediate recesses with longitudinal ribs between same, said longitudinally extending recesses or depressions on the back face of said stop casting having rounded ends, the upper longitudinally extending end and intermediate recesses or depressions. on
the back face of the casting having deepened portions 18, 18 and 20 formed by said bends or convolutions 4, 4 and 6, substantially as JOHN F. OGONNOR.
