NAsH, a citizen of the United States, residing in in the county ofCook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Single which this object or result is ter sill directly in C C are the two limbs or members of a horizontally disposed draw-bar yoke, each Center-Sill Cars, 'of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to draft rigging, and more particularly to draft rigging designed for use on single center sill cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a draft rigging of a strong,.simple, eflicient and durable construction, which will be suitable for use on single center sill cars and which maybe easily and conveniently applied, and which at the same time willhave revision for lateral or side play of the draw-bar. I
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices, by
practically accompiished, the preferred embodiment of the invention being shown in the accornpanying drawing forming a part of th1s specification.
In said drawing,- Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in vertical longitudinal sect on showing a single center sill car draft rigging embodying my invention, one of the members of the draft yoke being removed to better show the other parts. Fig. 2 is a plan View partly in central longitudinal horizontal' section. 'Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the front draw-bar and yoke connectin block. Fig. 5 1s a detail perspective view of the combinedrear follower and draw-bar yoke key. Fig. 6 1s a perspective view of one of the members of the draw-bar yoke. on line 7 .-7 of Fig. on line 88 of Fig. in omitted. I
n the drawing, A represents the center sill of a car of the kind having a single cenline with the draw-bar B.
1 and Fig. 8 1s a section 1 the rear follower bepreferably asteel forging.
' D is the connecting block between the yoke Oand draw-bar B, and E a horizontally disosed flat'ke extending through the raw- 5 and connecting block D.
also with a rear recess,
Fig. 7 is a cross section the center sill The central upright web a of the center sill A is furnished with a front recess, pocket or cut-out portion A to receive the drawbar B and front connecting block D, and
pocketor cut-out portion A to receive the front and rear fol lowers F F and the cushioning devices of the draft rigging, the two recesses or pockets A A ter sill web a.
2 being separated by an intervening. bridge or connecting portion a of said cening and draft-lug members secured in pairs on opposite sides of the center sill web a surrounding the recess or pocket A therein. Each of the combined center sill "web-reinforcing and draft-lug members D is preferably of cast metal and furnished with an integral transversely extending limb or member G each referably corresponding in Width to the width of the bridge member a of the web a between the recesses or pockets A A Each of the web reinforcing and draft lug members G is preferably of angle form in cross section and adapted to fit the web and flange a of the center sill A. The web-reinforcin and draft-lug members G on opposite si es of the web are connected thereto by rivets said members G G and the center sill web.- The web-reinforcing and draft-lug members G are secured to the center sill web around the recess or pocket A and areas arranged that their meeting ends or faces 9 2 break joints with each other. The angle shape of the members G in cross section give them an extended horizontal bearing against the upper and lower ends of the draft rigging followers F F The draw-bar and yoke connecting block D is furnished with a four sided or walled socket d at its front end to receive the rear end of the draw-bar and to which said drawbar is removably connected by the front key E. The connecting block D is provided with .curved or rocker bearing facesd for engagement with the horizontally disposed yo e members C O and thus permit the draw-bar B to have a limited lateral lay in respect to the oke as cars to proper y pass aroundcurves. At its rear end, the connecting block D is furnished with a vertical slot, or {recess 6 to receive the bridge or connecting member a of required, to one le the.
web a and the cross limbs G 118 of the web-reinforcing and draft-lug members G which are secured one on each side of said web bridge a and this slot or socket (Z is furnished with curved or flaringupright sides or walls d to provide for the lateral play or swinging movement of the draw-bar B and connecting block D. Thekey E by which the draw-bar B and connecting block D are connected to the yoke members 0 C is furnished with cotters e.
i The center sill-web-reinforcing and draft-- lug members G are furnished with suitable stops for the followers to abut against, the number of these stops corresponding to the number of followers that are employed in the draft rigging. As illustrated in the drawing, the cushioning devices of the draft rigging are of a kind requiring only two followers, a front and rear one, and the draft lugs or stop shoulders on the members G are consequently only four in number, namely, a front one 9 a rear one 9, and two intermediate ones 9 and g to limit the compression of the springs or movement of the cushioning devices employed. The rear follower F is preferably furnished with integral key devices f for connecting the rear ends of the yoke members C C, the rear follower being thus a combined follower and yoke connecting key. It is preferably furnished with abutment shoulders f for the inner faces of the yoke members C to fit against and with removable cotters f which extend through the rear ends of the yoke members (1 and the key member f which fits in the slot 0 of the yoke member G.
The cushioning device of the draft rig- .ging may' be of any suitable kind or con struction. It, however, preferably comprises a longitudinally movable friction shell H, friction blocks H wedge block H anti-friction rollers it between the inclined or wedging faces of the wedge block and the friction blocks, and a spring or springs 11 11* within the friction shell H, and a preliminary compression block or follower H interposed between the rear follower I and the springs 11 II, the latter to provide for thebettcr cushioning of the lighter blows or less violent movements of the draw-bar.
