Description

W. F. ROWELL.
ATTACHMENT FOR GARMENT SUSPENDERS. APPLICATION nun) SEPT. 25. 1905.
WILLIAM F. ROVVELL, OF DEADVVOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA.
ATTACHMENT FOR GARMENT-SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1906 Application filed September 25, 1905. Serial No. 280,085.
T0 at w/wm, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. ROWELL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at 40%- part of this specification, Figure 1 represents portion of a garment-suspender having an attachment embodying my invention connected therewith; and Fig. 2 is a face view of the device, the covering-plate being removed.
Similar letters indicate like parts in both figures of the drawings.
A designates the body of a pair of garmentsuspenders; B, the button-tabs, and O my spring attachment, which is secured to the stitched pieces a and b, respectively, of said body and button-tabs. The attachment C consists of a shell or casing c, composed of a back piece d and a rim or flange 6, preferably rounded at the corners, so as not to present any sharp edges, and a covering-plate Passing through openings near the ends 111 one side of the rim e are the parallel rods 9 g,
forming the ends of the loop or bow h, to which the piece a is secured. The ends of the rods 9 9 within the casing or shell are se cured to one end of the coiled springs n n, the other ends of said springs being secured to the opposite side of the shellrim. Passing through the side of the rim to which the springs n n are secured and between the rods 9 g are parallel rods Z I, said arms being connected without the casing to the loop or bow m, which is secured to the piece I) of the button-tabs. The inner ends of the said rods Z Z are secured to one end of the contractile coiled springs 7c 70, which at their other ends are secured to the inner face of the side of the rim through which the rods 9 9 pass.
It will be noticed that the springs when in use or under strain are expanded in the direction of their lengths and in parallel lines and practically uniformly, any stress or pulling upon one spring or pair insuring substantially an equal strain upon each of the entire number, so that there is no twist in the device when in use, thereby insuring a uniformity in operation as well as in the wear of the several springs. The casing, which is preferably made of thin sheet-metal and is very light in weight, serves, as is evident, in protecting the springs from contact with any outside interfering substances in their operation.
The covering-plate, which rests on the studs to which the springs are connected, is secured to the casing in any suitable manner. It will also be noticed that the bow to which the piece a is secured is of greater breadth or width than bow m, to which the piece I) of the button-tabs is attached.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. A spring attachment for garment-suspenders consisting of a casing, rods working in pairs independently of each other in opposite sides of the rim of said casing; coiled contractile springs connected within said casing to said rods and casing; and bows outside of said casing connected to said rods; said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A spring attachment for garment sus penders having a casing with a coveringplate, bows on opposite sides of the rim of said casing, each having a pair of rods connected therewith and passing through said rim, and inner and outer pairs of springs within said shell and connected to said rods and casing, the inner springs being connected to one of said pairs of rods and the outer springs being connected to the other pair of I to the casing, and one of said bows being of rods, said parts being combined substantially greater width than the other bow, said parts as described. being combined substantially as described.
3. An attachment for garment-suspenders In testimony whereof I have affixed my 5 consisting of a casing with a covering-plate, signature in presence of two subscribing wit- L5 bows outside of opposite sides of the rim of nesses. said casing, pairs of rods passing through op- W. F. HOWELL. posite sides of said rim, one of said pairs of Witnesses: rods being between the other pair, and coiled I S. W. SHANNON,
1o contractile springs secured to said rods and WALTER O. J ONES.
