GABTER on soon sUsrENnnn.
Application filed April as, 1921. Serial No. 464,506.
T 0 all whom may concern.
Be it known that I, FRITZ Wnzrnsnne, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Sannieshof, Transvaal Province, Union of South Africa. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters or Sock Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garters or sock suspenders, and in particular to. that kind known as pad garters.
Such garters as commonlymanufactured consist. of a padfrom which the clip or part which engages with the sock depends-and an extendi'ble band-wlnch encircles the legprovided.at its ends with a fastening device.
The bands of such garters are usually made from elastic webbing or similar resilient material, the india-rubber component of which, as is well known, is of a highly perishable nature. This character istic of the elastic material is intensified as the webbing band is ordinarily under tension all the time the garter is in use.
Now the object of this invent-ion is to produce a garter of the nature referred to in which rubber will be dispensed with, and to utilize means of a much more durable nature in substitution therefor.
The improved garter gives all the advantages of those at present made with the further advantage of infinitely greater durability.
The invention will be described with the aid of the accompanying drawing, where- Fig. garter tion,
Fig. 2 is a part sectional view of a portion of a garter illustrating a modification of the resilient tightening means for the band.
Fig. 3 is a view showing a detail of con struction of the casing of the resilient tightening means. i
In Fig. 1 the numeral 1 denotes the pad of the garter which may be made of leather,
1 shews a part sectional view of a embodying one form of the 1nven fabric or any other suitable flexible mate rial. 2 is the clip or part which engages with the sock, and is shewn comprising the front loop 3 and back piece 4 carrying the button or projection 5 which engages in the loop 3, and between which loop 3 and back piece 4: and button 5, the material of the sock i placed and retained in the usual manner. tached to the pad 1, and the loop 3 is loosely or hingedly connected to the pad 1 in front of the back piece 4, in the ordinary or any other suitable manner.
6 is the band which encircles the leg, andis connected at one end 7 to the pad 1. i
The band 6 is made of any suitable flexi-' ble material, such as a soft and strong leather, woven fabric, et cetera.- The band 6 is shewn consisting of three parts or sec tions. 8, 9, 1( Intermediate the inner ends of the sections 8, 9, a resilient device is positioned, and in like-manner a similar resilient device is placed between the inner ends of the sections 9, 10.
In Fig. 1 each of the resilient devices consists of three helical springs 11, which are attached at their ends to preferably metal loops 12, which serve for connecting the springs to the inner ends of the sections of The back piece 4: is suitably. at; A
the band. The springs 11 are each enclosed by two telescopic casings or tubes 13, 14:, which may be made of leather or any other suitable material which is sufliciently rigid for the purpose. The outer ends of the two parts of the telescopic casing or housing may be suitably attached to the loops 12, orto the ends of the springs 11. As the springs 11 expand or contract when the garter is brought into use the telescopic casings 13, 14 move outward and inward in a manner that will be understood.
Although I shew two of the spring devices in the band 6, it is to be understood that one only or more than two may be pro Vided, and that each device may comp-rise any desired number of helical metal springs enclosed in telescopic casings.
If desired the leather or like telescopic casings may be lined with thin metal tubes, in order to facilitate the telescopic movement.
.In the modification shewn in Fig. 2, instead of separate telescopic casings being provided for each spring (as in Fig. 1) the whole three are enclosed in a single telesoopic casing or housing, comprising the twoparts 15, 16 suitably flattened at two opposite sides.
As illustrated at 17, 18, in Fig. 3, the parts 15, 16, of the single casing may be provided with metal linings if preferredor found desirable.
The garter is fitted at the ends with the ordinary hook 19 and loop 20, or other suit able fastening means and with the slide, buckle or shackle 21 for adjusting the length of the band as may be required. I
When the garter is brought into use the springs and casings of the resilient devices admit the band to be extended to place the hook 19 in engagement with the loop 20,.
and, when the band is released, contract sufficiently to shorten the band and. maintain the garter in the desired position around the le llvhat I claim as my invention and desireto protect by Letters Patent is z- 1. A; garter or sock suspender comprising a pad to which the seek is adapted to be de tachably secured, a sectional handmade of soft non-extendible material, which I is adapted to encircle the leg, means for detachably connecting the ends of said band, meansi'or adjusting the length of said band, and a plurality of resilient'devices placed intermediate the sections of said band, each of said devices including a plurality of helical metal springs, loops for attaching the ends of said springs to the ends of the sections of the band, and a telescopic cas ing'a pad to Which the sock is adapted to be detachably secured, a sectional band made of soft non-extendible material, which is adapted to encircle the leg, means for detachably connecting the ends of said band, means for adjusting the length of said band, and a plurality of resilient devices placed intermediate the sections of said band, each of said devices including a plurality of helical metal springs, loops for attaching the ends of said springs to the ends of the sec-' tions of the band, and a telescopic casing surrounding said springs, said telescopic casing being lined with metal, as set forth.
In testimony whereoi I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of t'wo subscribing witnesses. Y
FRITZ VVEINBERG. Witnesses:
