TILTING BIN AND COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1906.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. H RNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tilting Bins and Govers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a swinging bin structure especially designed for kitchen-cabinets, having a floating cover for the opening of the bin, said floating cover being so supported as to insure its proper position to cover the admission-opening of the bin when the bin is closed and said cover also serving as a stop to limit the forward or opening movement of the bin.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section showing the bin closed; Fig. 2, a similar section showing the bin opened, and Fig. 3 a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a suitable inclosing casing in which is pivotally mounted a swinging bin 11, in the drawings said bin being shown as supported by crotch-castings 12, (only one being shown,) pivoted upon a cross-bar 13. A portion of the top of the bin 11 is closed by a fixed cover 11; but the forward portion of the top of the bin is open at 14 to permit introduction and removal of material. It is this opening that I desire to close as tightly as possible when the bin is in closed position, and for this urpose I provide a cover 15, which is slight y larger than the dimensions of the opening 14. At the forward edge of the cover 15 I provide at each end a privot-pin 16, upon which thecover 15 may eely swing, and each of these pivot-pins 16 is mounted in a vertical slot 17, formed in an adjacent portion of the casing 10, said slot 17 having a vertical length somewhat greater .than the diameter of the pin 16, so that the pin may slide freely vertically, thus permittin the cover 15 to swing upon the pins 16 an also to move vertically bodily, so that it may easily accommodate itself to the movements of the bin and may lie squarely over the opening 14 when the bin is closed.
In order to limit the opening movement of the bin 11, I provide at its rear a cross-bar 18, which projects above the top 11 and when the bin is opened comes into engagement with the rear edge of the cover 15, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to prevent further opening swin of the bin.
I d it preferable-to make the bin of less depth at the rear than at the front, thus inclining the stationary cover 1 1 rearward and downward, by this means economizing space within the casing 10.
In order to remove the bin from the casing to permit cleaning, &c., the operator has merely to swing the bin nearly to the position shown in Fig. 2 and then with the fingers of one hand slightly raise the inner end of the cover 15, whereupon the bin may be lifted bodily from the cross-bar 13 and removed from the casing. Under normal conditions, however, the cover 15 engages the cross-bar 18 when the bin is open and prevents accidental withdrawal of the bin.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a suitable casing, of a bin movably mounted therein and having an opentop, a cover member mounted in said casing in position to cover said opemng when the bin is closed, a laterally-movable pivotal connection between said cover mem her and casing, and a stop member carried by the binand adapted to engage the cover to limit outward movement of the bin, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination,with a suitable inclosing casing, of a bin pivotally mounted therein by a separable pivotal sup ort and having an open top, a cover pivotal y mounted in the casing at its forward end by means ermitting lateral vertical displacement of t e pivots, and a stop member carried at the rear of the bin and adapted to engage the cover member to limit outward swing of the bin.
