STATEQ PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE L. PETER AND \VILLIAM J. SECRIST, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1906.
Application filed May 25, 1905. Serial No. 262,131.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MAURICE L. PETER and WILLIAM J. SnoRIsT, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in adjustable and removable hinges.
The object of the invention is to provide a hinge having one member constructed so as to be readily fitted and adjusted to a doorjamb and ri idly secured thereon without marring the face of the same by the use of screws, nails, or other fastenings.
Another feature resides in the construction of the hinge whereby it may be permanently secured to the frame of a door or other closure, so that the same may be readily hung and placed in position by simply attaching the adjustable member of the hinge to the door-jamb and tightening up the adjilistable screw to rigidly fasten the same in p ace.
Finally, the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, and efficient and simple and comparatively inexpensive to make.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction and operation, a preferable embodiment of which is described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a partial elevation of a door, a doorjamb, and the surrounding parts, showing one of our improved hinges in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, slightly enlarged and taken on the line m x of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is an inner side or face elevation of one of our improved hinges.
It is to be understood that as many hinges may be used as are required or found desirable and that a description and illustration of one of the hinges will suffice for a clear and perfect understanding of our invention. Therefore in the drawings the numeral 1 designates a leaf or member of an ordinary hinge, which projects between the furcations 2 of an elongated hinge member 3. The members 1 and 3 are pivotally secured together by an ordinary pintle 1 in the usual manner. Extending outwardly and rearwardly from the furcations and preferably in line with the pintle 4 are angular lugs 5. These lugs are so positioned that when the member 1 is fixedly secured, as on the frame 6 of the door 7, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, they will be divided centrally by the meeting edges of the said frame 6 and the door-jamb 8, thus projecting equally into the frame 6 and jamb 8, which are recessed to receive them. In this manner a flush oint between the said frame and jamb may be had. The elongated member 3 is provided with an extension 43, at the outer end of which is arranged a rearwardly-projecting lug 9, extending at right angles to the rear surface of the member 3 and parallel to the lugs 5. This lug 9 is screw-threaded, so as to receive an elongated screw 10, provided at its outer and free end with a thumb-piece 11. A double-pointed head 12 is loosely confined on the inner end of the screw 10, so as to impinge the edge or side of the door-jamb 8 and to allow the screw 10 to turn independently thereof to drive the points into the wood and securely fasten the member 3 in place. It is apparent that when the screw 10 is turned so as to drive the head 12 into contact with the door-jamb on one side the member 3 will be drawn toward the screw and the lugs 5 thus caused to firmly engage with the opposite edge of the jamb, thereby firmlyfastening the hinge member in place. It will be apparent that there is considerable distance between the lugs 5 and the lug 9 thus allowing the hinge member 3 to be engaged about door-j ambs of various widths, it being merely necessary to adjust the screw by turning the piece 11 to drive the pointed head 12 into contact with the jamb.
The hinge member 1 having been once secured on the door, the latter may be readily hung upon the door-jamb or can be removed and placed in position on another door-j amb having a greater or lesswidth without marring the face or surface of either.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hinge having one of its members provided with projections adapted to engage one side of a door-jamb or the like, and a screw carried by the member adapted to engage the opposite side of the jamb to fasten the member in place.
2. In a hinge, an elongated member provided at its pivot end with lugs, and an ad justable fastening device carried at the opfastening device adjustably mounted in the 10 posite end of the member. lug.
3. In a hinge, the combination with the In testimony whereof we affix our signahinge member, of an elongated hinge memtures in presence of two Witnesses.
5 her pivotally connected with the first-named MAURICE L. PETER.
hinge member and provided with lugs at its WILLIAM J. SECRIST point of connection with the said member, Witnesses: the said elongated member having a lug at A. L. PHELPS,
its outer or free end, and a screw-threaded M. B. SOHLEY.
