Description
No. 658,259. Patented Sept. I8. I900. n. w. HARLOW.
COMBINED BLIND HINGE AND STORM WINDOW FASTENER.
(Application filed. Apr. 26, 1900.)
(No Model.)
w E a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT W. HARLOW, OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED BLIND-HINGE AND STORM-WINDOW FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,259, dated September 18, 1900.
Application filed April 26, 1900. Serial No. 14,369. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. HARLOW, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Blind-Hinge and Storm-Window Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined blind-hinge and storm-window or s! orm-door fastener, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a perspective view showing the device used as a hinge applied to a blind, shown as swung open. Fig. 2 represents a similar view showing the blind closed. Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of a storm-window and showing the device used as a fastener for holding the storm-Window in place. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section on the line 4 4, shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a horizontal section on the line 5 5, shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 represents a detail perspectiveview of the combined blindhinge and storm-window fastener.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
A A represent the jambs or uprights of a window-frame, as usual, and B in Figs.'1 and 2 represents one of the blinds or shutters. To the outside of each jamb are secured two or more metal plates C 0, each provided with an integral laterally-projecting boss or hub G, which is internally screw-threaded, and through it is screwed the screw-threaded shank D, the inner end of which is preferably screwed into the jamb A or window-frame, as shown in Fig. 4. Each of the plates is socurely fastened to the jamb by two or more screws or similar fastenings, as shown. The
outer end of the screw-threaded shank D is bent at a right angle, as shown at D in the drawings, and when used as a hinge it is turned upward to receive the hinge E, secured to edge of the blind, as shown in Figs. 1 provide the screw-threaded 1, 2, and 4.
shank D with a check-nut d for the purpose of rigidly securing said shank in position to as a storm-window fastener, I unhinge the blinds and place the storm-window F in position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, after which I turn the shanks D about a fourth of a revolution, causing the angular portion D to project outside the storm-window, thus securing it firmly in place, as represented in said Figs. 3 and 5. By this simple arrangement it will be seen that the hinge-pin may readily be used for the purpose of firmly secdring the storm-window outside the window-frame without the need of any other fastening devices.
I have described my invention as applicable to window-blinds and storm-windows; but it is equally well adapted for hinging screen-doors and securing storm-doors when so required.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- The herein-described window and door attachment, comprising a metallic plate having means for attaching the same to a window or door frame and provided with an integral outwardly-projecting and internallythreaded hub or boss, a threaded shank screwed through said hub or boss and provided at its outer end with a bent portion projecting approximately at a right angle to the shank, and a lock-nut screwed on the threaded shank into engagement with the outer end of the hub or boss, said bent shank being adapted to be turned to either a Vertical or horizontal position and locked in either of said positions by the lock-nut and serve as a hinge-pintle or storm-window fastener,
substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof 'I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ROBERT W. HARLOW.
