Description

No. 811,659. PATENTED FEB. 6, 1906. P. GRI-LEY. :FOLDING BOX.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.31, 1905.
Lig'- @brow/nag PATENT OFFICE.
PETER ORILEY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NORMAN A. PERKINS, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING BOX...
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1906.
ib @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, PETER ORILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to ro which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes, and more especially to such boxes adapted for berries, small fruit, and
r 5 other like articles; and its object is to provide a simple, cheap, and durable device that may be repeatedly used and that can be folded in compact form for storage or shipment when out of use and to provide the same with vari 2o ous new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My device consists, essentially, of four rectangular sides hinged to each other, a bottom 2 5 hinged to one of the sides at one side, a supporting member hinged to the bottom at the other side, and interlocking means for detachably connecting the upper end of the supporting means with one side of the box,
3o and in certain novel features of construction and arrangement, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of the device as it i 3 5 appears when folded for storage or shipment;
Fig. 2, the same arranged for use; Fig.`3, a vertical section of the same as shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a detail of the interlocking device for supporting the bottom.
4o Like numerals refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The sides of the box are formed of a strip of suitable material of uniform width, preferably of strong pasteboard, and transversely scored or hinged at intervals to permit folding and to form the vertical angles of the box. I thus provide the four vertical rectangular sides 1, 2, 3, and 4, hinged together at the respective corners. One end of this material 5o extends over the other a short distance, as at 5, and is secured thereto by any convenient fastenings 6, the form of fastenings shown being wire staples. The bottom consists of a rectangular middle portion of suitable dimensions hinged. to one side of the box and adapted to turn up against the same and provided with a support at the other side detachably connected to the side of the box. For this purpose the bottom is extended at one side, as at 8, and scored or hinged, and l6o the extension secured to the side of the box by fastenings 13. The opposite side of the bottom is extended in like manner, and this extension 9 when the box is assembled for use extends upward on the inner surface of the side of the box to near the top thereof. To support this extension 9, a T-shaped portion of the same near its upper edge is severed, as at 10, and a recess 12 is cut in the upper edge of the side of the box adjacent thereto and the severed portion 1() inserted in this recess with the laterally-projecting portions 11 engaging the outer surface of the box, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
To strengthen the bottom 7 when thin 75 pasteboard is used, a reinforcing-plate 14 is attached thereto, as shown in Fig. 3. To fold the box, the supporting member 10 is detached from the recess 12 and the bottom 7 is turned up against the side 2 of the box 8o and the extension 9 folded upon the outside of the same. The sides of the box are then brought in two substantially parallel planes, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The device will then be fiat and compact and can be closely packed for storage or shipment.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is .I
A folding box comprising sides hinged to 9o each other and adapted to fold in two parallel planes, one of said sides having a recess in its upper edge, a bottom having at one side a hinged extension secured to one of the said sides, and a hinged extension at the other side of the bottom, and provided with a T- shaped portion adapted to engage the recess and support the bottom In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER ORILEY.
